As a new series of Home of the Year begins on RTÉ, we get to know show judge and architect Amanda Bone …
As a new series begins, tell us what you like best about being a judge on hoty?
Surprising myself, enjoying a home that I never expected I would. And getting the opportunity to experience a well-designed home in the flesh. You can only fully understand the spirit of a place when you are in it.
What sort of homes appeal most to you?
Irrespective of type, character or scale, a home that makes the most of what it is, where the owners fully understand the home they have and have made the most of its qualities and dealt with its limitations.
What does “home” mean to you?
Home to me is a place where I can forget myself. Home is where I feel safe, secure and relaxed.
Briefly describe your own architectural / interior design style.
Contemporary, minimalist, calm and comfortable.

What’s on your wish list to do next in your own house?
More bookshelves, more bedroom storage, a laundry/utility room, another WC/shower room…the list is long!
Do you believe in updating your interior every few years?
No, well designed interiors should be timeless and long lasting. I believe a home should naturally evolve and change as it responds and adapts to your needs and interests rather than making a conscious or forced effort to keep updating.
If there was a tweak or two you would make, what would it be?
I have a full height glazed sliding door leading from the entrance hall into the open plan living area, creating an enfilade and allowing views right though the length of the house. This works well during the day and summer but not in the evening or winter. It would be better solid than glazed to increase the sense of comfort and warmth.
What is your favourite room in the house and why?
I don’t have a favourite room, I gave each part of the house the same attention and for me every room is equal. If I was pushed, I’d say the garden, I designed the terrace so that it would get east, south and west light and in the summer it’s wonderful.
Home of the Year is returning to RTÉ One on Tuesday 14th of February at 8:30pm with judges Sara Cosgrove, Hugh Wallace and Amanda Bone.
