The Shelbourne, Co Dublin
It’s been a memorable year for Dublin’s grande dame hotel celebrating her 200th anniversary. After a year of celebration, a new suite has just debuted, named after Margaret Burke Sheridan, a key figure on the international opera scene during the 1920s. Sheridan was renowned for her performances as Mimi in La Bohème and the title role in Madame Butterfly, becoming Puccini’s most beloved soprano. After retiring from the stage, Sheridan made The Shelbourne her home where she would hold court in the Lord Mayor’s Lounge with tales of her colourful career. During her battle with breast cancer, she spent her final months in comfort there thanks to the generosity of a wealthy admirer. In tribute to her legacy, the new one-bedroom suite with living-room features framed memorabilia – her letters, programmes, a portrait – and even a gramophone with some of her original recordings. www.theshelbourne.com
Killashee House Hotel, Co Kildare
A major refurbishment of The Manor House here has just been completed, with a €5 million investment by FBD Hotels & Resorts into Killashee since they bought the hotel in 2022. The original house, which dates back to 1861, was home to the St Leger Moore family for many years and became famous for legendary parties. Many of its authentic features have been retained and restored, with a separate entrance leading to The Parlour, The Drawing Room and The Great Hall. The names of the twelve suites reflect the flora and fauna of the 55-acre estate, from Bluebell and Skylark to Camellia and Siskin; many with four poster beds and freestanding antique baths. There’s also The Florence named after Richard St Leger Moore’s beloved sister, The Robertson Suite which pays homage to the original gardener who created the first gardens at Killashee, and the Bell Tower named after the historic signature structure. Other upgrades have been to the spa, wedding and conference facilities, and the opening of The Wild Cherry Café. On a recent visit, I enjoyed a fine dining experience in the Pippin Tree restaurant where executive chef Philip Gleeson’s menu was a delight. On my next visit, I’ll try the Spa at Killashee which includes a dry floatation suite, a rasul chamber and access to the Hydrotherapy Suite. www.killashee.com
Station House Hotel, Co Meath
One of the new additions to Ireland’s Blue Book 2025, this boutique hotel was originally established as a railway junction in 1862, and later acquired by the Slattery family in 1981 who transformed it into a foodie destination surrounded by gorgeous gardens and twelve acres of woodland. I recommend the Signal Suite, originally a signal box with 38 individual levers to direct trains that converged on Kilmessan Railway Station. Decoristas will love the interiors throughout, with some original features remaining including the remarkable staircase from the Midland Great Western Railway Company. Guests can avail of a special offer to celebrate the inclusion in the Blue Book, until the end of February 2025. Enjoy a one night stay with dinner in The Signal Restaurant and an à la carte breakfast from €155 per person sharing. This deal includes a welcome treat of tea and scones on arrival, and a special gift from Thelma’s Pantry such as granola, jams, chutneys and biscuits. I’d happily drive to Kilmessan to stock up on these goodies! www.stationhousehotel.ie
Lough Eske Castle, Co Donegal
Part of The Harcourt Collection, Lough Eske Castle has just elevated its offering with the launch of 25 new Donegal Suites. These provide guests with larger rooms perfect for special occasions, multigenerational stays or an indulgent getaway. The design of the new suites was inspired by the surrounding landscape, featuring a bespoke Magee 1866 tweed in distinctive burnt orange, and salt and pepper, colour palette. The tweed originates from the firm’s “Eske Bunch” collection named after its weaving mill, situated on the banks of the River Eske not far away in Donegal town. Four-poster beds, roll-top baths, fireplaces and tech from a Phillips 50-inch smart TV to CubieBlue bluetooth device are other design details. The Donegal Suites also showcase local businesses including Sliabh Liag Distillers, McNutt of Donegal, McGonigle Glass Studio, Kevin Callaghan Pottery, The Donegal Chocolate Man, Kinnegar Brewing, and artists Patrick Murphy and David Mitchell. www.lougheskecastlehotel.com
