Back to the stone age …
Thought crystals and coloured beads were just for hippie types? Not so, feel-good jewellery is back centre stage and recent odes on the runways from the likes of Isabel Marant and Christian Dior have fast-tracked them into must-have, meaningful accessories. In ancient Greek and Cypriot cultures, worry beads (a string of beads manipulated with your hands to help pass time) were used to calm the mind in difficult times. Unlike prayer beads, they have no religious purpose; Christian Dior’s SS20 wrap-around bracelets are definitely a nod to the worry kind.
Uber cool London jeweller Roxanne First, has teamed up with Emma Lucy Knowles (aka the crystal healer who has a multitude of A-list celebrity fans like Victoria Beckham and Louise Redknapp) to create a very special necklace that takes care of you as you wear it called The Power Of Three. The duo have a mutual love and appreciation for the beauty and power of crystals.
Irish jewellery designer Merle O’Grady runs crystals workshops and creates custom kits and custom crystal bracelets. O’Grady will put together a selection of crystals/particular crystal beads for you (or as a gift) based on a mixture of her crystal knowledge, intuition and uses a pendulum that she has been using since she was a teenager to ‘dowse’ for what’s best for the intended wearer. “When I first started using crystals, I was totally overwhelmed with all the meanings and esoteric language. I love making it easier and less daunting for people to start working with crystals, presenting them in a modern and stylish way and breaking down how you can use them into practical steps,” she says. Her aim is to help make people feel better, as they did for her, to feel more empowered and to use them as a reminder to take a mindful moment. O’Grady is running a 90-minute live online crystal workshop on May 17 and a Mystery Crystal Circle, a space for crystal-lovers to gather and add to their collections on May 22.
