we caught up with emylou hurley, founder of the ethical activewear brand Organic movement to find out more about her sustainability goals for 2022, as well as advice for the eco-conscious shopper …
Throughout the pandemic many of us felt encouraged to take up yoga as a mindfulness meditation technique – this is one of the many reasons why the carefully-curated collections from Organic Movement are some of our new favourites.
With an interest in correcting the unethical supply chain of synthetic yoga gear, Emylou Hurley founded Organic Movement activewear in 2018. Each piece is made using organic cotton, a natural fabric that allows your skin to breathe freely – making it perfect for yoga, pilates or just chilling out in your down-time.
What are your sustainability goals for 2022?
I am focusing on sustainable fabrics now more than ever. I really want to tackle and explore the waste generated from the fashion industry. That is why I am looking at possibly switching the composition of my leggings from organic cotton to a recycled cotton. By giving a fabric a new life, rather than creating a new one from scratch, less water is consumed and overall a more positive impact on the environment is sustained.
My new passion is natural dye. I plan on using 2022 for experimenting with different plant dyes in the hope that I can create a natural dye collection of yoga wear. This really excites me as I will be looking to use what is in my natural surroundings to make the dye. No toxins or chemicals – just plants!
I’m also excited that I will be moving production to Portugal which is a lot closer to home, meaning the leggings won’t have to travel too far to get to their new owners.

Do you have any export plans?
It’s definitely in the pipeline. Once my collection is made in Portugal I will be looking to export.
What advice would you give a shopper looking to become more eco-conscious? What should we be looking for?
I recommend buying natural, non-synthetic clothing like cotton, linen and wool. It’s not only more comfortable for you to wear, and better for your skin, it is also better for the planet. Synthetic clothing can take anything up to 200 years to decompose and ends up in landfills around the world.
Ask yourself do I really need this and will I actually wear it?
I always check to see where my clothes are made, too. By buying something that is produced in an ethical way you are supporting businesses who pay their garment workers a living wage. This is vital if we want to eliminate sweat factories across the globe. I recommend watching The True Cost documentary to gain a greater insight into the fast fashion world. I literally became a conscious consumer overnight after watching it and it’s what encouraged me to set up Organic Movement.
