These 5 High Street Micro-Trends Are Big News

From nifty layering to how to re-wear your summer shoes in winter, these are the micro-trends we’re noticing now …

turtlenecks under shirts

From left to right: Rollneck sweater, €39.95, at Massimo Dutti; cashmere rollneck jumper, Autograph, €135, at M&S.

This clever trick not only keeps you warm but it makes you look like you’ve mastered the art of layering. It works particularly well with striped shirts, with a turtleneck in a block colour worn underneath.

jumpers as scarves

Grey mélange merino wool jumper, €79, at COS.

There’s nothing more casually elegant than a cashmere or merino wool jumper draped across your shoulders. The look has been spotted on Instagram for a while now, and it’s less, ‘anyone for tennis’, more downtown cool. Shrug a soft jumper on top of your workwear, or on top of your favourite knit (knits on knits are the zenith of cool right now).

summer shoes and slouchy socks

From left to right: Slingback shoes, €49.95, at Zara; leather ballerinas, €45.99, at Mango.

This trend may be a little less user-friendly than the others, but it’s a boon for sustainability, as it means you can get more wear from your summer shoes, even in colder climes. If ballet flats don’t appeal, switch them out for chunky loafers. Bonus points if your footwear boasts an on-trend square toe.

neckerchiefs

Silk scarf, €49; www.arket.com.

Small, silken and usually printed in some kind of sweet pattern – neckerchiefs dominate at the minute. We’re not sure if the trend is a nod to the late Queen Elizabeth II or the explosion of vintage in fashion (perhaps both) – either way, we’re sold. Don’t forget to layer yours up with some cool gold chains.

double denim

From left to right: High-waisted wide leg jeans, €49.99, at Mango; denim shirt, €27.99, at H&M.

Going denim on denim certainly rules out any worries about matching. If you are dipping a toe in the trend, do so by layering a jumper in a block colour on top (you should only see a hint of the denim shirt poking through). Avoid too much contrast by choosing denim washes that are tonally similar.
