Diane Keaton For J Crew Is The Autumn Inspiration We Need

Autumn inspiration courtesy of the original Coastal Grandmother …

The woman who brought us the “Coastal Grandmother” trend (and some of our favourite feel-good films) could now be the source of our autumn wardrobe inspiration, too. American retailer J Crew today announced Diane Keaton as one of the faces of its AW22 campaign.

In the campaign images, Keaton is pictured wearing a navy vinyl-look trench coat (made from a laminated linen that’s apparently glossy on the outside and soft on the inside), a black fedora and black turtleneck (both style trademarks for Keaton). Shop the look on jcrew.com – or recreate using pieces from your existing wardrobe. Part of the success of this look is its multigenerational appeal, a style icon for both younger and more mature women, just last year, 76-year-old Keaton was also the face of Gucci’s 2021 campaign, proving her enduring style status.

What makes this look work? Here, the belted trench is presented in a classic shape but becomes more modern with the laminated finish. Simple black wool trousers and a turtleneck speak to Keaton’s own classic, polished style and the fedora adds a touch of personality. If you’re considering a statement coat this season, think vinyl, metallic or textured finishes for an outer layer that will elevate any outfit. An item like this could work in multiple wardrobes and for multiple age groups, depending on how it was styled.

J Crew has recently undergone a transformation, appealing to a new generation of savvy shoppers who are interested in a modern take on the preppy look that the brand is known for. New ambassadors include UK content creator Lucy Williams, New York-based journalist Harling Ross (formerly of Man Repeller) as well as model and Harper’s Bazaar contributor, Abisola Omole.

Perhaps most intriguing is the brand’s new Head of Design for women’s and kid’s collections, Olympia Gayot. We love to follow her Instagram for daily outfit inspiration (in the form of office mirror selfies) and a sneak peek at her design and creative process for J Crew’s collections.

If Diane Keaton is the first in a line of AW22 campaign ambassadors, we look forward to seeing who’s next …
