Cosmetic Cocktails: Why Made-To-Measure Beauty Could Be Your New Self-Care Ritual

Mixology is the new mood in skincare – make way for made-to-measure beauty, says Sarah Halliwell …

The Clarins Mixologie concept of is the skincare equivalent of perfume-combining – pairing two separate things together to make something new and exciting. “This is what beauty therapists have always done,” says Denise Barthe, International Training Manager at Clarins. “It’s about adapting the texture and sensoriality to suit their clients, and to keep that spa experience special and unique.” Until now, expert mixes have been bit of a mystery – but with Mixologie, Clarins are sharing just a few key expert mixes so you can personalise your skincare ritual, and create new results and fragrances. It’s a simple way to get the most out of your skincare.

Go to your local Clarins counter to discover these carefully considered combinations. The Mixologie menu outlines some specific “cocktails”, bringing together two compatible products – but never more than two, to avoid overloading skin: as Barthe explains, “Your skin can react to things so we have made sure the mixes are safe and lab-tested, as you’re getting a double concentration of ingredients.”

The key blend that stands out for me is this one: warm your usual amount of Clarins’ Super Restorative Day Cream in your palm, and mix in a small amount of Beauty Flash Balm. Super Restorative is a luscious day moisturiser designed for mature and menopausal skin; adding Flash Balm (an enduring favourite, now with a more gel-like texture than you might remember) to it creates something entirely new, with an intensified smell and feel that’s intensely nourishing and glow-inducing. Both products work extremely well separately – and together they are a new force.

Clarins always works with inspiring women, from Claudia Maria Ferreira da Costa, a silver-haired fencer in her 60s, to key figures in-house, such as chic Parisienne Jenna Courtin-Clarins, granddaughter of the company’s founder Jacques (the company is still family-owned). Her favourite mix is ideal for anyone prone to oily skin: “I combine the SOS Pure Face Mask mixed with a drop or two of Lotus Face Treatment Oil, made of pure plant extracts.” It’s not just for face: try a few drops of Blue Orchid Oil added to the Hand and Nail Treatment Cream. And another dynamic duo: I am entirely converted to the Clarins Mixologie duo of Total Eye Lift blended with Everlasting Concealer to create the perfect tinted eye treatment.

Mix & Match

So should we get our spatulas out? The Clarins Mixologie concept is carefully considered. Civilians should approach mixology with caution: like any cocktail, it’s best to start with a recipe. But there are small twists that will help you get more from your skincare. I have always added a drop or two of facial oil into my moisturiser as it seems to add more glow to the skin (adding Augustinus Bader’s facial oil to the Rich Cream is a particularly decadent example), and something like Nunaia’s rosehip-rich face oil will boost any decent face cream.

It’s about enjoying the process as well as the results. “When we take a bit of time for ourselves and turn skincare rituals into self-care rituals, it’s almost impossible not to notice subtle changes in our skin day to day,” notes VP of Artistry for La Mer, Clyde Johnson. “If skin looks or feels stressed or dehydrated, adding a few drops of The Renewal Oil to foundation creates the most deliciously soft, visibly radiant glow while providing hydrating benefits that help skin look and feel more centred.”
