Weekend Tipples: The Perfect Quarantine Cocktail Hour

Who remembers going out for cocktails? The debate over where to go and which cocktail to order. Waiting somewhat impatiently for it to be served and the sigh of happiness as you take the first sip after a long and arduous week. As Maurice Chevalier would say: “Ah yes, I remember it well.”

Sadly, those days are on pause for now, but there is no reason why we shouldn’t enjoy these occasional indulgences while supporting local businesses from our own homes. To have your very own cocktail hour at home, consider skipping all the preparation and have everything delivered to your door.

In Dublin, The Blind Pig Speakeasy built a reputation on the secrecy of its location, now however, it will come to you. With no fewer than 15 different cocktails on offer, choosing what to order will be the hard part. All cocktails are available in a standard size or you can upgrade to a 500ml or 1L bottle should you be planning ahead for a long (cocktail-soused) weekend. There is also a selection of wines, bottled beers, a selection of bar bites and even pizza available to order. Prices start at €9. www.theblindpig.ie

Proof Pizza on Dublin’s Thomas Street is also delivering cocktails and Espresso Martinis for two could very well be winging their way to you in the same time as it takes to press the order button on your Deliveroo app. www.proof-pizza.com

In Ranelagh, Dublin 6, Dillinger’s has cocktails to take away at two for €15 including the Ultimate Bloody Mary or a Mimosa Tray which includes a bottle of Prosecco and a choice of fruit purees to make your own mimosas at home. Dillinger’s also serves as a collection point for 777’s famous bottled Margaritas. www.dillingers.ie

Also in Dublin, Bar 1661 has just launched a range of pre-batched cocktails for the discerning drinker to enjoy at home with nationwide delivery. www.bar1661.ie

In Dún Laoghaire, Oliveto at Haddington House has cocktails kits for one or two people for collection with online instructions on its Instagram page on how to concoct the perfect tipple. www.haddingtonhouse.ie

In Cork, Cask Bar has its famous cocktails bottled, for collection. Available in 500ml or 750ml bottles, prices start at €25 and the Rhubarb House Cocktail sounds like a good enough reason to drive to Cork (should it be within your 5k radius) with Roe & Co Irish Whiskey, Campari, and Rhubarb. www.caskcork.com

Should you prefer to make your own cocktails from scratch, The Celtic Whiskey Shop has everything you could possibly need to rustle up your favourite concoction www.celticwhiskeyshop.com, as does The Drink Store in Stoneybatter, www.drinkstore.ie.

Watch an online cocktails masterclass on Peploes’ Instagram feed – it will have you channelling your inner Tom Cruise in no time at all. https://www.instagram.com/peploesstephensgreen

Finally, Irish furniture company, Woo Design has a selection of drinks trolleys fit for any occasion at www.woodesign.ie, while Industry & Co has all the glassware you could wish for at www.industryandco.com. Just add company – from next Wednesday, you can have four people not of your household to come sit in your garden at a safe distance. Or you could keep them all for yourself …
