Caroline Duffy’s Feel-Good Floral Designs

An stablished floral artist and designer, Caroline Duffy shares her creative inspiration …

Who or what kickstarted your interest in design?

I first had an interest in art at home where I would spend hours painting and drawing with my mother. She was highly creative, and spent a lot of time making clothes for herself, and for me and my siblings. My father was, and still is, an avid gardener. I would spend hours in the garden watching and helping him sow seeds, weed, and take care of the plants. This is definitely where my interest and fascination with flowers began.

How has your art evolved into wearable creations?

Over 20 years ago, I completed a Higher Degree in Printed Textiles at the National College of Art & Design. I went in wanting to do fine art painting, but after a ‘taster week’ in textiles I was hooked! The repeating patterns, flow of imagery, and transforming my art onto fabric intrigued me. After graduating, my first job was as a designer in a textile design studio in New York; a wonderful experience. I then travelled, and worked in design houses in Australia and London; honing my craft. In 2020, I decided I had enough of designing for other brands, and wanted to create under my own name.

What have been some of your bestsellers?

My silk scarves and kaftan dresses are my bestsellers. The simple silk scarf can transform a look in an instant, adding interest, and a pop of energetic colour. I’m thrilled to be a Guaranteed Irish Fashion Award Finalist as it’s a chance to shine, gain recognition, and connect with like-minded brands and customers who love supporting homegrown fashion. Plus, it’s a great way to celebrate hard work, boost visibility, and show the world what makes my brand uniquely Irish.

Flowers in full bloom and high colour represent all the joy, good energy and positive vibes life can bring. In the shadows, deeper toned buds and leaves are waiting to bloom and for a chance to shine.

What is the inspiration for your latest collection?

It’s inspired by the feelings you get surrounded by Irish garden flowers. How I feel deeply affects my creations, and the inspirations that I’m drawn to. My favourite flower at the moment has to be the Hydrangea, with its bountiful petals symbolising abundance for me.
