Autumn Skin Reset: Expert Advice And What We’re Trying This Season

Hear from the experts on maintaining fresh skin for autumn and find out what we’re trying for the new season …

In autumn, our skin needs some TLC, with pigmentation and dryness being common issues. What do the experts recommend? Dr Laura Lenihan, of Dr Laura Clinic in Co Galway says: “I’m a big fan of  Lase MD Ultra to clear away pigmentation – since we got the machine last year we can’t keep up with demand. It removes pigment like nothing else, in up to three sessions.”

Harley Street dermatologist Dr Sam Bunting (whose products are available online) notes: “Pigmentation is the skin concern that drives people into my clinic in droves come September. The reality is it makes skin look flat and lifeless. For some, it’s simply a consequence of underdosing or not reapplying their sunscreen, leading to sunspots and irregular skintone. For others, it’s a flare-up of melasma, hormone-triggered splodges on forehead, cheekbones and the top lip, as they are exposed to high levels of both UV and visible light. Pigmentation is best treated using a combination of actives that suppress melanin production in conjunction with a retinoid for a multitasking approach that’s really effective.” Her own Flawless Brightly Serum (€60) contains four powerful active ingredients including “pigmentation superhero” ten per cent azelaic acid, to improve skintone and restore radiance.

Corinna Tolan, co-owner of Monica Tolan in Balbriggan and Malahide, swears by vitamin A for managing pigmentation long-term, both at home and in salon treatments. “It not only helps to regulate how much pigment is produced within the skin, but it also has the unique ability to repair DNA damage in skin cells, which is often what causes melanocytes to misbehave in the first place. Using SPF and incorporating vitamin C both topically and internally via a skincare supplement is also important, but unless the skin is vitamin A-rich everything else is just firefighting. Vitamin A is where the real change happens.
