Are You Comfortable In Your Own Skin?

The Irish book and range you need to know now …

Jennifer Rock’s brand-new book, The Skin Nerd Philosophy: Your Expert Guide to Skin Health, has just launched, and it’s the mine of information you’d expect from the CEO and founder of The Skin Nerd and multi-award winning facialist and skin tutor. Rock’s goal is to spread the word of skin health across the globe. And The Skin Nerd Philosophy aims to change the way you think and feel about your skin – and to encourage you to develop a healthy mindset towards your skin.

In 2017, Jennifer launched the world’s first online skin consultancy and membership service, the Nerd Network, which is made up of over 15,000 clients worldwide, each with their own specific skin concerns and lifestyles. And this is one of the things that sets this book apart: consulting with all these clients means the book is filled with real, down to earth advice, and takes a long-term approach rather than promoting a “quick fix”.

As well as creating the Cleanse Off Mitt (recently featured in Caroline Hirons’ Summer Kit 2020), Jennifer Rock is founder and CEO of Skingredients®. It’s a carefully edited range of results-driven, active skincare that’s suitable for daily use by all ages and skin types. Now just a year old, it’s stocked nationwide and recently launched in the UK. Skingredients offers the perfect balanced diet for your skin: it’s made up of key skincare necessities, proven active ingredients and with a primary focus on skin health. Having consulted with Nerd Network members from around the world via online skin consultations, Jennifer has a real understanding of what we want from our skincare.

The Skingredients Core 4 represent four products that everyone can (and should) be using for a balanced skin diet and that form the basis of any Skingredients recipe. Packed with results-driven ingredients, together they promise (the clinically-proven kind of promise) to help protect, nourish and maintain the skin. Kick off with the PreProbiotic Cleanser (€25), followed by the Skin Veg (€42) pre-serum – this is an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant-rich hero that works to prep your skin to best absorb the active ingredients in your other products. It brightens, exfoliates and reduced the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Your skin needs vitamins for its proteins, and the Skin Protein serum (€42) is enriched with vitamins A and C to revamp and revitalise – it’s ideal if your concerns include dark spots, dark circles or lax skin. Last, but certainly not least, your daily skin protector: Skin Shield SPF50 PA+++ (€42), a broad-spectrum, mineral-based fluid that doubles as a primer – it gives skin a peachy tint and a dewy finish, with no greasiness or chalky whiteness.

Alongside the staples within the Core 4, Skingredients also features two Mix + Match products, so that you can customise your daily routine as your skin requires: a blemish-busting cleanser, the high-powered Sally Cleanse (€25), and a ceramide-rich moisturiser, Skin Good Fats (€42). The whole range is smart and multitasking; for example, Sally Cleanse, with 2 per cent salicylic acid, can be used as a cleanser, mask or targeted spot treatment.

Jennifer’s first book, The Skin Nerd: Your Straight-Talking Guide to Feeding, Protecting and Respecting Your Skin, was a skincare bible, with its practical, back-to-basics approach. And now the The Skin Nerd Philosophy: Your Expert Guide to Skin Health investigates skincare even further, taking a holistic approach across diet, exercise and mental health. The Skin Nerd Philosophy is a multi-disciplinary guide to accepting the skin you’re in while taking care of its health, and includes advice from a range of experts in skincare-adjacent fields, such as wellness, nutrition, cosmetic surgery and even psycho-dermatology. Because skin concerns are not just about aesthetics. As one of the contributors, psychodermatologist Dr Alia Ahmed, explains, “Thirty per cent of people with skin disease have high levels of psychological distress … Stress and skin are closely linked.”

Accessible, straight-talking and practical, The Skin Nerd Philosophy investigates the impact of stress on our skin, and dispels all manner of myths about skincare. It outlines what you can solve yourself, with some knowledge and a “jigsaw” approach, and when you need to consult an expert. If you’ve ever found the sheer choice of skincare bewildering and wonder what your skin really needs, Jennifer’s clear, no-nonsense approach will make everything crystal clear. It’s time to do your skin a favour …

The Skin Nerd Philosophy: Your Expert Guide to Skin Health is published by Hachette Ireland in hardback & eBook.
