Aesop: The Beauty Brand You Need to Try

As a brand we’ve until now rarely had a chance to get our hands on, AESOP has finally hit Irish stores. Here’s why Beauty Editor SARAH HALLIWELL will be stocking up …

We’re having a bit of an Aesop moment. The photogenic Australian skincare brand has always been hard to get hold of here, apart from in the run-up to Christmas when Brown Thomas’ Marvel Room treats us to a welcome selection.

But now you can find Aesop at Samui boutique in Cork, and also at Makers & Brothers’ At Home near Baker’s Corner, co Dublin – Aesop will be available permanently from their website from now on.

The brand began in 1987, and all these years on it still stands out from the crowd: the ethos is high quality, beautiful natural ingredients and no synthetics, and Aesop’s great skill is making everyday items interesting and beautiful, such as hand wash, deodorant and mouthwash as well as skincare.

Resurrection hand wash, for example, contains mandarin and rosemary and smells fantastic; other elegant scents include geranium leaf, vetiver root, rose and cardamom –we’d love them to branch into perfume.

It’s a collection that’s both beautiful and useful: the practical brown bottles have a minimal, pared-back appeal in either a traditional or modern bathroom, and the metal tubes of hand balms and body scrubs look pleasingly traditional.

And they’ll appeal to guys: try the Moroccan Neroli Shaving Serum as a luxurious gift for someone coming to the end of Movember.

Head over to Makers & Brothers this weekend to see the full range displayed brilliantly in the bathroom, and have a Bibi’s coffee and browse the carefully considered Irish design and gift ideas while you’re there.

It’s a relaxed, sociable, distinctly cool way to shop – a far cry from crowded high streets, and with a pleasure factor you don’t get from putting things in a virtual basket. Don’t miss the stylish Haeckels candles, Superfolk seaweed prints, elegant Ilse Crawford/Georg Jensen candlesticks and magnificent “Chewbacca” chair.
