A match made in fashion heaven …
Following the sell-out success of its inaugural event with acclaimed writer Jay Glennie, author of The Making of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, No Filler returns to Stella Cinema, Rathmines, for an exclusive Irish screening of Marc by Sofia. It’s a match made in fashion heaven. Academy award-winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola offers a rare glimpse into Jacobs’ creative process, close personal relationships and singular vision.
The screening is being presented by cinephile Anthony Remedy, founder of No Filler, who acknowledges the strong affiliation he has with Marc and Sofia: “I’ve seen all of Sofia’s films, and as a completist when it comes to certain directors, it’s essential viewing. Both Sofia and Marc have actually been mainstays of inspiration for my life. I was lucky enough to have met her briefly at the signing event in London for her Sofia Coppola Archive book, and her talk at the BFI. A true auteur, like many top-tier directors, her work only gets better with age. Critics slammed Marie Antoinette on release; now it’s a classic. No one went to see Somewhere; now it’s one of the quintessential LA films.”
As for Marc Jacobs, Remedy has been a fan and early adopter. “I recall three must-visits when travelling to NYC in the 2000s, whether I had the money to spend or not. McQueen at the Meatpacking, Prada in Soho and Marc Jacobs in the West Village. Visiting Marc’s stores back then, buying the T-shirts and sweaters, you could feel something was happening there. It’s a strange thing to say there was an electric atmosphere in a store, but this was the case when visiting Marc’s famous Bleecker Street store.”
“Around that same time, my soon-to-be wife wanted to buy a silver Marc Jacobs coat in Brown Thomas, which cost a huge amount of money for her as a 23-year-old budding stylist and required many will-I-or-won’t-I chats. Marc is a reminder of great trips to New York, record shopping, Keith McNally’s restaurants and exploring Soho and this new place, Williamsburg! Fast forward over 20 years, listening to Marc’s profound interview with Business Of Fashion during the pandemic, I’ve always found him to be a thoughtful creative. The best of NYC. The best of America. Oh, Corina bought the coat. She still has it to this day – I’m sure she will wear it to the screening.”
Taking place on Wednesday August 19 at 6pm, the screening is followed by a panel discussion exploring the enduring influence of Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs on film, fashion and contemporary culture, chaired by journalist Kate Demolder. Joining the conversation are actor and writer Valene Kane, stylist Corina Gaffey and Chloe Mac Donnell, deputy fashion and lifestyle editor of The Guardian.
