A Good Night’s Sleep Guaranteed

Where to get good bed linen …

Your bed is supposed to be your sanctuary. For a sleep that’s good for your body and the planet, look for organic cotton. This cotton is grown without the use of pesticides or fertilisers that are harmful to the environment, the wildlife, the farmer and you.

White & Green, an Irish company run by a mother and daughter duo, stock the most luxurious organic cotton 300-thread count bedding in a sateen weave finish. They are offering 10% off your first purchase and free delivery for orders over €75. Home Store + More have great silk pillowcases, two for €25 (one side is silk and the other is cotton hence the price). The white version is pretty and classic, the steely grey version is great for fake tan wearers.

Bamboo has been hailed as the new vegan silk (where the silkworm emerges out of its cocoon naturally). Australian linen company Ettitude supplies bamboo lyocell bedlinen that is known for its silky-soft, cooling and sustainable qualities. Made from 100% organic bamboo, it’s hypoallergenic and thermoregulating and saves your hair from frizzing up (win win).

Francis Brennan The Collection‘s bedding range at Dunnes Stores is super luxe (step away all you non-ironers, the cotton is so crisp when washed, it takes an age to press but is worth it). Never make your bed gain? The trend for crumpled, lived-in look linen sheets still lives on, H&M Home and Zara do this well. For a more formal look, the Thomas Ferguson premier range, in white flax linen, is super luxe and ideal for humid summer nights, www.fergusonsirishlinen.com.

We are all aware of the dreaded dust mites, but the build-up of saliva, body oils and skin cells on bed linen can wreck your skin. Weekly washing is an absolute must for pillowcases, every three days if you are a stomach sleeper and prone to breakouts. Pillow protectors do provide an extra layer of protection between the pillow and your skin (remember to wash pillow protectors every few weeks). Cotton and linen clings to dead skin cells more than bamboo and silk, the latter duo wick away moisture and produce less stress on your skin because of their soft, slippery fibres.
