The New Universally Flattering Midi Haircut to Try For Spring

The style works with all face shapes and is universally flattering for all ages, says hair stylist Gareth Bromell …

I caught up with Gareth Bromell before he headed to LA for awards season; he’s working with everyone from Caitriona Balfe to Cillian Murphy, and created Jessie Buckley’s striking “grungy 1920s bob with undercut and micro bangs” for her role in Cabaret.

For spring, Bromell says we are all looking for a change – and the key is to be able to recreate a style at home while embracing your own natural texture and movement. “It’s all about mid-lengths for spring: the midi is the big thing. How it’s styled is important: naturally dried textures are trending, with products used to amplify movement. You can wear these mid-lengths in various ways, with a centre parting, or create that modern shag look with a bit of layering. It works with all face shapes and is universally flattering for all ages.”

For inspiration, Bromell says, look to Margot Robbie’s mid-length layered look. “To add a bit more volume, my go-to finishing product is Kiehl’s Silk Groom. And if your hair tends to be frizzy, we do a vegan relaxing permanent blowdry to smooth and relax the hair for three to six months.”

One home tool to invest in this season? “Curling irons – you can also use them as flat irons to smooth the hair.” TIP: Look out for Bromell’s own styling cream launching this summer. To book in with Bromell at his Harvey Nichols salon at Dundrum Town Centre, you’re looking at a March appointment at the earliest; www.hbygarethbromell.com.
