What’s on Author Paul Howard’s Bedside Table?

Paul Howard, writer and creator of Ross O’Carroll-Kelly shares what he’s reading now …

I’ve just finished reading The Echo Chamber, John Boyne’s satirical send-up of the world of Twitter mobs, cancel culture and the stupidity of people acting in large groups. It’s absolutely hilarious and worthy of Evelyn Waugh.

I love Ann Ingle’s Openhearted, a memoir of an extraordinary life by an extraordinary woman. Widowed with eight children after losing her husband to suicide, her book is a story of survival in the face of extraordinary hardship, but also a love story – and one that betrays not an ounce of mawkishness or self-pity.

The first money I ever earned from writing was as a postcard caption-writer for John Hinde. So Paul Kelly’s In Hinde Sight is the perfect nostalgia hit for me. In this, his second volume, Paul visits the exact spot where some of John Hinde’s most memorable images were taken, then retakes the shot. Old and new are presented alongside each other in a series of spreads that I can lose myself in for hours.

I’m looking forward to Crossing the Line, the autobiography of former Ireland rugby international Willie Anderson, the man who went nose to nose with the New Zealand haka at Lansdowne Road. Written with Brendan Fanning, it’s the story of a life scarred by sectarianism, alcohol addiction and personal tragedy and one of the great “unwritten” Irish sports book – until now.

Paul Howard’s latest Ross O’Carroll-Kelly book, Normal Sheeple, Penguin, is out now.
