No longer relegated to workout and weekend wear, over the past number of years, trainers have been elevated into everyday staples in our wardrobes. But what are the trending styles for summer 2024? Whether for work or weekend, we’ve rounded up the styles that those in the know are wearing now. And it turns out, it may be time to move on from our beloved Adidas Sambas – they have reigned supreme for the last two years but there are so many interesting new styles waiting to be plucked off the shelves, it could be time to put them back in their box for a season or two.
The hottest style to make a return for summer? Forrest Gump and Farrah Fawcett’s favourite running shoe, the Nike Cortez, is back and we are already converted. This shape ties in perfectly with the retro mood in trainers right now and couldn’t be easier to style, paired with wide leg jeans, cargo trousers, maxi skirts or your favourite white summer dress. For those who prefer more arch support the New Balance 327 trainer is the perfect combination of style and comfort, and if you like a slimline shoe that teams equally well with leggings as it does with dresses then the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 is the one to go for – the sunshine yellow shade just adds to the appeal.
If you are a diehard Adidas fan and don’t want to let go of your Sambas just yet, look to the latest collab with Wales Bonner for the sleekest styles to wear this summer. Elsewhere in collaborations, we love the Miu Miu x New Balance collection, pictured above, based on the iconic New Balance 530 running shoe, complete with mismatched laces. The current mood in trainers is clearly for slim, retro styles but if you prefer something chunkier, veering into “ugly shoe” territory, you might like Hoka’s Clifon 9 or Bondi 8, the On Cloudmonster or Salomon XT-6 platform styles to elevate your look.
