Sheer polka dot, or patterned tights, are a perennial favourite this time of year, making any outfit feel extra special. Right now, diamanté details are big (try this pair from M&S), no matter what kind of detail you choose, keep the rest of your outfit simple. Choose a dress without any pattern or stick to one colour, like black, and instead lean into textures like velvet, ruffles, taffeta and sequins.

It’s official: bows are the elevated detail of the season. Wear them in your hair, as fastenings on a jacket, or on a velvet party bag. Bow earrings are the latest accessory we’re seeing everywhere, made from pearls or delicate glass beads. Hint: Irish designer Caoimhe Murphy’s glass bow earrings are particularly festive.

An off the shoulder top is a fast-track to looking elegant, particuarly if your go-to festive look revolves around jeans and a nice top. Look to brands like Self Portrait or Irish label Fee G’s Marilyn top, which has a Bardot shoulder and a striking ruffle.

Perfect for those looking for something more maximalist, sheer lace detailing is the party dressing trend of the season. Look for skirts with sheer detailing or bodysuits that can be layered underneath blazers or jackets.

Decadent feather trims – as seen on Kelly Rutherford, pictured above or on Candice Lake, pictured in the main image – are the perfect way to add excitement to a simple black dress, or two-piece. Look to brands like The Robe, Sleeper and River Island
