Future perfect: these six wardrobe essentials work right now and will see you through to spring in style …

printed dresses
Those dresses you invested in for the festive season? It might not be time to pack them away, just yet. The new season is all about the statement dress: metallics and sequins are hanging around for spring, as are bold prints. Layer up look-at-me dresses with some knitwear or a chunky scarf, as seen with this Stine Goya printed dress, below. The longer length means it will go perfectly with tights and stomping boots right now, too.

whimsical knits
We all know that we rely heavily on knitwear not just in winter, but all throughout spring. Which is why it’s essential to have some dependable knits in your wardrobe artillery, no matter what the season. Thankfully, the knits coming through right now offer warmth, but also shake things up a little with lighter colours, and interesting silhouettes (see this ribbed knit top by H&M), nodding to what’s next.
Knitted top, €19.99, at H&M.
a wool trench
A wool trench combines the perfect spring staple we all know and love with the warmth of a winter coat: win-win.
Relaxed wool belted trench coat, €249, & Other Stories.
the elevated flat
Whether you love a party flat or you’ve spent the winter living in Birkenstocks, you’ll be delighted to know that next season is all about the flat shoe – the elevated flat shoe, that is. Whether that’s a fancy ballet pump, or a low-rise take on the clog (see the below metal-buckled clogs from Massimo Dutti), we’ll be erring on the side of chic and comfortable for the forseeable.
Leather clogs with metal buckle, €99.95, at Massimo Dutti.
relaxed jeans
Aaand breathe: jeans right now are all about allowing yourself to exhale. Looser fits, baggier shapes and straighter (rather than skinny) legs have been around for the last few seasons and are going nowhere for spring summer 23. Meaning those more relaxed, slouchier shapes will work hard for the season ahead, too. Here’s a hack: buy your existing straight-legged shape, but in a size or two larger (depending on the brand): they should be looser, but not ill-fitting. Stick to the wider side of straight legged styles (they’re universally flattering) or go a little nostalgic with a boot cut flare. Rustic details like raw hems (see the Paige pair, below) add to the laissez faire look.
Raw-hemmed straight-leg jeans, Paige, €280, at Brown Thomas.
the jeans alternative
Aside from nailing the season’s jeans silhouette, it’s important to have a pair of trousers in your closet that aren’t made from denim. Taking the mantle as the trousers-du-jour are the pleat-front Gelso trousers by The Frankie Shop (see below). Polished but relaxed, wear them with retro-look trainers now, and upgrade them with skinny-strapped sandals, or chunky sliders, when spring summer really takes hold.
