6 Spring/Summer Trends to Look Forward to Post-Isolation

The most uplifting trends from the SS20 catwalks – because let’s face it, we all need a sartorial mood booster for when all this has passed …

L-R: Fendi, Paco Rabanne, Louis Vuitton

Psychedelic Nostalgia

At Versace, Fendi, Louis Vuitton and Paco Rabanne, we saw psychedelic prints that hark back to the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. These prints pack a punch when it comes to lifting your mood – pair a printed Cuban-collar shirt with matching accessories (bucket hat, bag or neckscarf) as seen at Fendi or a mellow yellow balloon-sleeve blouse with mismatched printed skirt as spotted at Louis Vuitton and you’ve got a sunny disposition guaranteed.

L-R: Richard Quinn, Dries Van Noten, Erdem

Polka Dot Party

“There is never a wrong time for a polka dot,” said Marc Jacobs, who once again showed the feminine print in his SS20 show. From Marylin Monroe’s pretty bikini to Christian Dior’s New Look and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, polka dots have come full circle gracing the catwalks at Dries Van Noten, Gucci and Balenciaga this season, proving the feel-good pattern is worthy of a place in your spring/summer wardrobe.

L-R: Valentino, Versace, Valentino

Jungle Fever

Jungle prints abounded at the SS20 shows, perhaps most pertinent was Valentino’s jungle print with a playful monkey peeking out from billowing silk blouses and hanging out on maxi dresses, while J-Lo stole the show at Versace when she strutted out in that jungle-print dress – a recreation of the original she wore to the Grammys in 2000, the aftermath of which is said to have led to the creation of Google Images search functionality.

L-R: Loewe, Zimmermann, Alexander McQueen

Craftwork

From broderie anglaise and lacework to knitting, crochet and embroidery, heritage crafts need our support now more than ever – and luckily they are right on trend. At Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton used upcycled lace and tulle from previous seasons; Jonathan Anderson opened his Loewe show with a white lace tunic and matching trousers proving once again his affinity to handcrafted garments; Kate Spade crafted crochet dresses while Erdem and Zimmermann all featured outfits of broderie anglaise. Carefully crafted clothing to fill our summer wardrobes and lift our spirits, this is feel-good fashion at its finest.

L-R: Gucci, Rejina Pyo, Marc Jacobs

Statement Suiting

Move over stiff suits, playful statement tailoring has arrived. This season’s workwear calls for statement colours, bold prints and interesting cuts – think cropped jackets and Bermuda shorts. Dries Van Noten had a splash of energetic florals on a sharp black two-piece suit, Gucci paired a shrunken turquoise blazer with wide leg trousers and Rejina Pyo showed suiting in a brilliantly bright rainbow check.

L-R: Erdem, Valentino, Loewe

White-Out

And finally, a simple white dress to dream of warmer, sunnier days with your toes in the sand and a cocktail in hand, as spotted at Valentino, Loewe and Cecilie Bahnsen. Pure perfection.
