Our favourite Airbnb accommodation, from chalets in Finland, villas in Iceland and a floating glass hotel in Sweden to log cabins in Alaska …
Chalet, Kittilä, Finland
You can stay in this well-quipped chalet in magical Lapland and Finland’s largest ski resort, Levi. The chalet sleeps seven guests, with four bedrooms and seven beds. It’s only 200m to the ski resort slopes from the chalet, with a ski bus stop nearby, or the village is a ten minute drive away. Downstairs, there’s a spacious open plan kitchen and living area with a fireplace, shower room, private sauna and outdoor wood-heated hot tub to keep you cosy as you admire your surroundings.
Aska Modern Cabin, Reykjahlío, Iceland
Aska is a part of a complex of accommodation on the northern shore of lake Myvatn. This cabin is ideal for a couple, just one kilometre away from the lakeside in the middle of a 300-year-old lava field boasting stunning lake views. You can hike and bike around a scenic 37km long country road around the lake when the weather allows, or this is the perfect spot to get away from it all and totally switch off. It’s also one of the few places in the area with free parking!
Villa Lola, Akureyi, Iceland
One of three apartments in the exclusive residence area of Akureyri, the capital of north Iceland a 10 minute drive away, this villa sleeps four in two rooms. Take in breathtaking views over the bay or the Aurora Borealis if you’re lucky to catch it in winter, and the midnight sun in summer. Go on snowshoewalks through fjords, cross-country skiing, dog-sledging or ice-fishing in winter, or book hiking tours, whale-watching, horse-riding, kayaking, angling or golf in warmer weather.
Floating Glass Room, Jokkmokk, Sweden
For a completely unique experience, this luxury floating “bubble” for two allows you to truly immerse yourself in the true last wilderness of Europe, led there by a mountain guide in the cultural melting pot of the Sami culture. See the Northern Lights, fish in the warmth through the floor or even go reindeer-riding if you agree with that! The joy of the Igloo boat is that it can move to any location, including thousands of lakes in summer where you can swim from the floating terrace or enjoy water sports. The best of both worlds.
Aurora House, Alaska, United States
A Belatopia property nestled on three acres of land 20 minutes from Fairbanks where the Northern Lights are visible nearly every clear night from September to April. During summer, watch the midnight sun set on the large deck complete with outdoor dining area or in the private barrel sauna with panoramic views, while inside you can expect a gourmet kitchen, wood-burning stove, Blaze King fireplace and three ensuite bedrooms. Sold!
