5 New Series To See Out Summer

It’s time to catch up on these end of summer series …

Wednesday, on Netflix

Jenna Ortega, Hunter Doohan, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Steve Buscemi, Luis Guzmán and Joy Sunday are back for season two, but who else can we expect? For one, the inimitable Joanna Lumley who, according to her, was meant to have a much smaller role as Grandmama, but of course as soon as she arrived on set they knew they had to keep her around. This season, Wednesday is focused on improving her psychic abilities, saving her friend’s life from a potential untimely end, and uncovering a murder mystery. Look out for Irish locations in Dublin’s Deansgrange Cemetery, Trinity College, Powerscourt Demesne in Enniskerry, Co Wicklow and Charleville Castle in Co Offaly, which is reputed to be haunted … perfect for the Addams family!

The Assassin, on Prime Video

Keeley Hawes (Miss Austen, Line Of Duty) stars as a retired assassin who reunites with her estranged son, played by Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory) in this six-part series. Spoiler: her dangerous past catches up with them, forcing them to go on the run together while uncovering a conspiracy that threatens their relationship. For action and interesting familial dynamics, there’s also a touch of humour with Jack Davenport (Pirates Of The Caribbean) as the villain, so you know you’re in for some edge-of-your-seat entertainment.

Ballard, on Prime Video

Maggie Q (Mission: Impossible III, The Protégé) commands the screen in this new crime drama as Detective Ballard, who leads the LAPD’s underfunded cold case division – always a good start as shown in Slow Horses and Dept Q. A spinoff of TV series Bosch: Legacy, expect style and substance with a great supporting cast including Rebecca Field (A Star Is Born), Micheal Mosley (The Calling), John Carrol Lynch (Fargo) and Courtney Taylor (Out of My Mind).

Overcompensating, on Prime Video & Apple TV

This light-hearted coming-of-age story follows an American football player – brilliantly played by Benito Skinner, aka Benny Drama – who overcompensates as he struggles to accept his sexuality in college. The stellar cast includes Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights), Adam DiMarco (The White Lotus), Megan Fox (Jennifer’s Body), Kyle MacLachlan (Sex and The City), Lukas Gage (You), Kaia Gerber (Babylon), Wally Baram (One All The Way), Mary Beth Barone (Sugar Baby), Corteon Moore (Abraham’s Boys), Nell Verlaque (Big Shot) and Owen Thiele (Adults). If you like Hacks, you’ll love this.

Adults, on Disney+

For fans of Lena Dunham’s Too Much and Girls, Adults will fill that gap in your watchlist. This eight-part series tells the stories of five twenty-something-year-old co-dependent housemates who navigate adulthood together in New York. Be it relationships, work or dealing with loss, this ensemble comedy is one to watch. Starring Charlie Cox (Kin), Malik Elassel (Resident Alien), Jack Innanen (The Office Movers), Lucy Freyer (Paint), Amita Rao (Deli Boys) and Owen Thiele (Theater Camp).
