Irish-founded cafés to whet your appetite …
Luna Coffee
Named after founder Aimee’s niece, Luna’s new café in Mount Merrion joins her first in Sallynoggin, which turned four last November. Luna continues to support local producers with Roasted Brown coffee, cold-pressed juices from Green Beards in Ranelagh and Donnybrook, and trending strawberry matcha. All washed down with house-baked treats including triple chocolate, walnut and sea salt cookies; maple, pecan, cinnamon and pistachio buns; peanut butter and hazelnut bites, plus an array of sandwiches from goat’s cheese to Reubens.
Sister
Another female-founded café, Sister is run by sisters Róisín – who’s also founder of much-loved vegan restaurant Saucy Cow in Temple Bar, Dublin 2 – and Aislinn Lawlor. Based on Lennox Street in Portobello, Dublin 8, expect plant-focused menus with speciality coffee and matcha, such as miso brown sugar shaken espresso and coconut mango iced matcha. The reviews are glowing after only a week, so we expect this is only the beginning for this dynamic duo.
The Day Café
Formerly popular Daddy’s Café, the team at The Circular in Rialto created The Day Café to carry on the legacy. The signature Daddy’s chicken and grape sandwich is still on the menu, with the addition of treats from The Black Pitt Bakery. With outdoor seating to boot, it’s the perfect place for some casual grub.
Dandelion
A new market and deli on Main Street in Howth, located in the former Country Market, after many years “behind the stove” chef Aoife Barker has realised her dream in Dandelion. Having most recently created the 147 Deli sandwiches at Chubby’s, the offerings here are similarly mouth-watering. Find everything you need in the fresh produce section, or by delivery.
Bread 41
Since starting Bread 41 in 2018, Eoin Cluskey’s empire has grown from strength to strength, with a fifth location in Bray joining Pearse Street, Stillorgan, Cabinteely and Greystones. There’s no wonder it’s unstoppable with highly covetable baked goods, from its famous range of sourdough breads and chimi churi savoury bakes to praline buns or special goodies the team whip up on any given day. Perch outside with 3FE coffee to fuel up before or after a walk.
