It’s wonderful to see a clutch of talented Irish designers producing really covetable bags, here are five we love for summer …

Designed and ethically made in Dublin by Caoimhe Grant, AUGUST NIGHT bags are softly sculptural with distinctive details – gentle twists, knots and generous bows. Two new designs in duchesse satin, the Bow Sac and Bow Backpack, in daffodil and coral, are inspired by the landscapes of Northern Ireland-based artist Jean Duncan. “My bags are designed to elevate a simple outfit, to brighten up a plain tee and jeans or to complement a stylish dress for a special occasion,” says Grant. Fabrics include velvet and linen. From €150; www.augustnight.ie.

Irish-owned MY NAME IS TED’s new Mini Door bag is the perfect size for keeping cards and phone together and accessible, with all-around zips for ease of access. €495; www.mynameisted.ie.

Sailing bag brand, MCWILLIAM BAGS, founded in Crosshaven, Co Cork, has designed a new collection of striped holdalls, shore bags and totes in five colourways. For each bag sold, two trees are planted on the customer’s behalf through the Eden Reforestation Project. From €60; www.mcwilliambags.com.

From phone wallets to messenger bags and backpacks, AOIFE ROONEY bags are sustainably produced. Her new duffel bag can be tucked under your arm like a newspaper, handheld or worn crossbody for comfort. Versatile! €1,250; www.aoifelifestyle.com.

Bushmills, Co Antrim-based TAYLOR YATES was founded by mother and daughter Karen and Ellen Yates, who are inspired by their surroundings on the north coast. Thoughtfully designed bags, named after formidable and fabulous women in their family, are also sustainably produced in super-soft sheep leather and are a joy to hold. From backpacks to clutches, only ten of each colour in each design are produced. The Elsie bag, which can be both clutch and shoulder bag, is part of their summer Reclaimed collection, made from repurposed leather in sorbet shades. £475stg; www.tayloryates.com.
