5 Glossy Things To Do This Weekend

WHERE: A highlight of the MusicTown 2020 programme, which is running as a virtual event until September 27, is a performance by Ardú (pictured) one of Ireland’s most innovative vocal ensembles. Streamed online on September 11 at 7pm, Ardú will present an eclectic programme of vocal music, with each piece inspired by this year’s events, from the pandemic to public protests. Featuring the Irish premiere of “The Prophet” by English composer Alexander L’Estrange as well as music from composers such as Johannes Brahms, Andre Kim Arnesen, Rosephanye Powell and Kerry native Criostóir Ó Loingsigh, the concert will be broadcast from St Kevin’s Oratory, in the grounds of St Mary’s Cathedral. This special performance will be broadcast on Ardú YouTube, Facebook, ardumusic.com. It is free to view and VIP tickets are available for €8.50: these include an exclusive programme, introductions by the composers and an extra encore; www.musictown.ie.

WHAT: Another festival which has moved online is the Dublin Festival of History which takes from Friday, September 11 to Sunday October 4. Now in its eighth year, the festival will host a line up of Irish and international speakers and panel discussions, in addition to a number of socially distanced walking tours of historical places such as St Anne’s Park, Raheny, Croke Park and Richmond Barracks, Inchicore. One of the highlights from the programme is a talk on “Dead Famous: An Unexpected History of Celebrity from Bronze Age to Silver Screen” with Greg Jenner in conversation with Anna Carey. Jenner discusses the history of celebrity with a vibrant cast of over 125 actors, singers, dancers, sportspeople, freaks, demigods, ruffians, and more; I wonder if Jenner will include his namesake of Kardashian fame? www.dublinfestivalofhistory.ie

WHO: Abstract art lovers are in for a treat this month. One of the most popular figures of Irish abstract art, Peter Monaghan, and a foremost member of the Brit Art movement, Ian Davenport, will have their work displayed at Gormleys Fine Art from today Thursday, September 10 until September 30.

Both Monaghan and former Turner Prize nominee Davenport share a keen interest in the combination of colour and line to create vibrant, dynamic pieces. Their pieces complement one another in a harmony of tone, shape and form. Monaghan creates three-dimensional artworks consisting of cut, shaped and painted lines of colourful board, which often appear to morph in colour depending on the angle from which they are viewed. “My work is a dialogue between light, colour, movement and illusion – exploring the relationships and contrasts between painted flat surfaces, protruding spheres, cubes or geometric shapes.” Their works will be exhibited together in Gormleys Fine Art, 27 Frederick St South, Dublin; www.gormleys.ie.

WHY: “Time and Space” is an exhibition of new paintings by John Fitzsimons, which has opened at The Olivier Cornet Gallery, 3 Denmark Street Great, Rotunda Dublin 1. Presenting paintings of colour, line and shape, Fitzsimons’ new works explore the endlessness and expansiveness of time. Each artwork presents four, four-sided shapes of rectangles and rhomboids side by side, modified by form and colour; www.oliviercornetgallery.com.

WHAT: Galway International Arts Festival’s Autumn Edition programme is well underway and “The First Thought” talk series continues this weekend. Speakers include Larry Donnelly, Gaia Vince, Glenn Paterson and Claire Hanna with moderators RTÉ’s Áine Lawlor, journalist Marion McKeone, Arts Council Director, Maureen Kennelly and the Connacht Tribune’s Group Editor, Dave O’Connell. Issues discussed include Does Culture Drive Human Evolution? Brexit and whether Trump will be beaten by Joe Biden in the upcoming presidential elections. This subject is sure to be raised by Samantha Power, who discusses “The State of the US” on Saturday September 12 at 4.30pm. Watch the talks live as they’re taking place across GIAF’s online channels or later in your own time. All are live-streamed on GIAF’s YouTube, Facebook and on GIAF.ie.

AND … An interesting Zoom worth tuning in for takes place on Saturday September 12. The theme is MAKING IN / PLACE, reflecting the idea that place has been a priority for all of us this year. Taking landscape, workshop and city as the starting points for three separate discussions during this online event, Glenn Adamson will lead the conversations. The line-up of contributors includes Lord Burlington, of Lismore Castle, Joe Hogan, basketmaker, Jeremy Irons, actor and activist, Sara Flynn, ceramic artist, Lord Puttnam, film producer and others.
