10 Glossy Things To Do This Weekend

June is just so much fun. Aside from Pride and summer vibes, there’s jazz brunch, van clubs, and on-the-sea hot tubs…

Book this new hot tub boat

As an alternative way of cruising the waters of Lough Ree, why not board Ireland’s first floating hot tub, which has four different pick up points in Athlone? Accommodating up to six passengers, the cruises are 90 minutes long and were created by Shane McCormack, an RNLI volunteer with over 20 years’ experience as operating boats on the river Shannon and as an ISA boat instructor. The sunset cruises have proven to be popular – there is a built-in sound system and guests can bring their own drinks to sip enroute. “Guests have been overwhelmed with just how refreshing and relaxing the whole experience is. One customer has been on board three times already!,” says Shane.  “Even if the weather is bad it doesn’t take away from the experience – there’s something about being in a 37 degree hot tub while the rain comes down, that is very cocooning!” That said, all routes are designed to operate in safe waters and cruises are only cancelled in severe weather warnings; Prices start from €180; www.hottubboat.ie

Join this exclusive van club

Have you been tempted to try a campervan holiday but still want a luxury holiday experience? Time to investigate lifestyle brand Seaweed & Saltwater, founded by brothers Naoise and Cillian Barry, which offers premium campervans for hire and also ocean view holiday home rentals.

Naoise and Cillian have converted a Mercedes Sprinter into a top of the range adventure vehicle that comfortably seats and sleeps four people. Using a large lithium ion battery and solar panels, the van enables the occupants to live off-grid for up to a week and the powerful heating system makes the van suitable for year-round use. It’s also fitted with a wifi hotspot providing fast 4G for working remotely and a rack for bikes and a kayak. The van includes a toilet, hot indoor and outdoor showers, induction hob, microwave and top notch kitchenware. A cooler box and firepit are also provided and occupants can enjoy sleeping in two comfy double beds with bedding and duvets from The White Company along with McNutt throws from Donegal and cashmere hot water bottles from Ekotree Cashmere Knitwear in Doolin.

The Seaweed & Saltwater “Van Club” is an ideal option for those who don’t want to commit to buying their own campervan and works like the traditional timeshare concept. Club members have access to the van for up to four weeks during the year with the benefit of all of the extras including bikes, bedding and barbecue facilities.

Prices for the Seaweed & Saltwater campervan start from €200 per day and pick-up and drop-off is from South Dublin; www.seaweedandsaltwater.com

Take this new guided trail

If, like me, you’ve been through the quad, ticked off the Book of Kells in the Old Library and are a frequent visitor to the Douglas Hyde Gallery but want to know more about Trinity College Dublin, then its new  guided or self-guided walking tours may appeal. Those participating in Trinity Trails, which depart from the bell tower in Trinity’s Front Square are taken on a 45-minute loop of the campus, which explores some of the university’s hidden gems.  Key points of interest along the trail include the Old Anatomy Museum, Museum Building, Rose Garden and Zoological Museum. The tour ends by The Old Library where visitors can either continue their journey into the Book of Kells and Old Library exhibition or enjoy lunch or coffee at one of Trinity’s many restaurants and cafes. Trinity Trails tickets can be booked via tcd.ie/visitors/trinitytrails and self-guided tours can be accessed by downloading the Visit Trinity App available on the Apple and Google store.

Slip into some Mary-Janes

Fun, fashionable and comfortable new footwear is not always easy to find, but the new collection from Irish designer Nicki Hoyne seems to tick all the boxes. Her Mary Jane Mule puts a spin on two classics; the new mules come with a Mary Jane strap to prevent them from slipping off. They available in five colourways – teal suede with neon pink strap, red suede with purple strap, leopard print pony hair with black strap, silver glitter with teal strap, and white glitter with black paint splatter with black strap, all available in sizes 36 – 43. Commenting on her latest collection,  Hoyne says: “This collection is celebrating our summer of freedom, meeting friends and getting back in the office. It is uplifting and colourful after a long two years.” The collection is available from www.nickihoyne.com

Watch Elvis at the cinema

It may be niche but it’s getting a lot a rave reviews. In cinemas this weekend is Elvis the biopic directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Baz Luhrmann starring newcomer Austin Butler and Oscar winner Tom Hanks.  This story is seen through the prism of Elvis’ complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager Colonel Tom Parker (played by Hanks).  As told by Parker, the film delves into the complex dynamic between the two spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America.  Central to that journey is one of the significant and influential people in Elvis’s life, Priscilla Presley (played by Olivia DeJonge). I can’t wait to see the costume design by Catherine Martin. For more on Elvis’ style read this feature.

Join the Pride festivities

EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum has several events to celebrate the weekend including a Pride Festival LGBTQ+ Tour which starts at 12pm on Saturday and Sunday, June 25-26. This tour highlights personal stories – from that of Dr James Barry, who completed the first successful caesarean in the world, to prolific author Emma Donoghue. Discussing Ireland’s LGBTQ+ past and present, the tour considers the ways in which visitors might interpret the museum’s stories on the basis of their own identity and experiences; www.epicchq.com

As long-standing supporters of the LGBTQ+ community the Latvian vodka has collaborated with the Harvey Milk foundation for Pride season for several years – this is the second iteration of the bottle. See this new exhibition at Newbridge Silverware, Co Kildare

In what is a world exclusive, “Betty White’s Golden Moments” exhibition opened this week at The Museum of Style Icons and  includes memorabilia, jewellery, garments, and personal items from the actress’ life.

Often called “The First Lady of Television”, White received 21 Emmy nominations during her career, appearing on shows, sitcoms and films such as Ally McBeal, That ‘70s Show, The Proposal and Bringing Down The House. Her most remembered role was in  The Golden Girls, where she played Rose Hylund – a naïve widow who was as sweet as she was clueless.

Martin Nolan of Julien’s Auctions explains, “We are excited to have the opportunity to bring this beautiful exhibition to Newbridge Silverware and the Museum of Style Icons and to offer the public this unique opportunity to see the property before it goes to auction in September at Julien’s Auction in Beverly Hills and online.” In the meantime, the exhibition is open and free to enter.  For more information see www.visitnewbridgesilverware.ie
