A form-fitting jacket
While oversized mannish blazers always reign supreme this time of year, French women know the value of a good fitted jacket that nips at the waist. Look for cropped styles in black or grey, which are popular this season.
Grey Claire recycled wool blazer, €515; www.skallstudio.com.
Distinctive loafers
Yes, loafers for autumn, or winter, aren’t that original a concept, especially given the explosion of styles taking over the last few seasons. But, there’s something about the discerning selection of penny loafers that you see on the streets of Paris – muted colours, exquisite leather, rich shades like chestnut or cognac, not too much hardware – that are a cut above the rest.
Cognac leather loafers, €79.99, at Mango.
Straight white jeans
Denim trends come and go, but we’ve noticed that women in Paris veer towards straight-leg white jeans as a constant; styling them with cowboy boots, ankle boots, crisp outerwear in navy, as well as true-blue denim.
Chalk column straight-leg jeans, €89, at COS.
A leopard print coat
Loved not just by the fashion crowd, trendy animal prints are always a favourite with French women who wear them with a casual ease that makes them look anything but gauche. When it comes to coats, choose one with exaggerated lapels for a 1970s feel.
Leopard print faux fur coat with collar, €149, at Zara.
Muted knits
The best French fashion labels are great at knitwear and we particuarly love the muted, ‘normcore’ knits rolled out at this time of year. The fact that they go with everything makes them the perfect foil for jeans, excellent winter boots and statement coats.
Beige ribbed wool merino turtleneck, €115, at COS.
