This year saw a big return to blusher (worn high on cheekbones, for a natural flush; try Rare Beauty’s), balmy lip tints, bright colour for eyes and a new wave of intense scents. Here’s our pick of the best beauty of 2024, selected from stiff competition.

SKIN Ignae, a new line that hails from the Azores, impressed us, especially the sensational scented body oil. Irish skincare was better than ever: Modern Botany made a comeback this year – how did we manage without it? Plus, Nunaïa launched its first moisturiser – a beauty.

BEST FIND Low-key Dr Mahers is the best-value natural face care in town: nab the Liberty serum, and marvel at its skin-nourishing qualities. Oils by Sligo-based Soak and C.Atherley made baths a treat.

INNOVATION Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Winter Primer was one of my repeat buys of the year, for instant glow.

NEW ARRIVAL Victoria Beckham’s luxurious beauty landed in Dublin, and proved an instant hit – especially the concealer.

SCENT Irish perfumes stole the show: Cloon Keen’s Báinín eau de parfum, with notes of bergamot, gorse and jasmine, is a forever fragrance. We love the sunny warmth of The Burren Perfumery’s all natural Néroli, too. Soft “skin” scents were big this year, exemplified by Chanel’s starry Comète, warm and bright, and Barénia by Hermès. Matiere Premiere is the rising star to watch.

TREATMENT Velvaere spa is a calm space in the centre of Dublin that offers excellent facials. Try also Swissline facials at The Shelbourne Spa.

PHARMACY STAPLES Aveeno’s affordable essentials for face, body and hair continue to be daily reliables.

FOR LIPS We swerved matte lipsticks and chose moisturising balms: Clarins’ Lip Oil Balms, Tatcha’s lip care and Trinny London’s moisturising lip colours stood out.

HAIR I swear by Innersense’s haircare, and am dependent on Dyson’s AirStrait, which takes hair from wet to dry and smooth in seconds.

WAITLIST We’re waiting for Merit, the US make-up that earns its hype, to land here.
