Everything you need to know about the brand-new foundation from Gucci Westman …
In the market for a foundation upgrade? Westman Atelier’s Supreme Bio-Complex Liquid Foundation launches today (€75, at counters nationwide and online). We asked Gucci Westman to tell us more …
When I met Westman at Cashel Palace earlier this summer, she explained her key focus when starting off Westman Atelier. “When I was deciding what this should be, I found that there wasn’t anything that really merged luxury, ingredients, performance and a level of naturality.” She found that the more “natural” beauty around at the time “wasn’t glamorous, or often it could be a bit dull, or limited.”
Right at the beginning, Westman explains, “I enlisted this green chemist, and we established our initial blacklist that was super-extensive – it was beyond the EU blacklist, far beyond. One of my first things was that I didn’t allow silicones. And that was really difficult, to formulate products that have that luxury, that glide and that sensorial aspect, to create something that women would feel comfortable replacing their foundation with. That was a huge challenge with the lab in the beginning. We’ve always included active ingredients at the highest level, in the right delivery systems, so that the products do something for your skin while you’re wearing them.”
“I always wanted to create an edit of products that would be very translatable, and very intuitive – and not overwhelming. It’s kind of a smaller edit, because I find that when you have too many products, it becomes overwhelming. I certainly become unconfident when there are so many choices. Like, a buffet is my worst nightmare! I just feel like I end up taking so much less than I would have, because you can’t cut through and you don’t know where to start.” Westman’s aim is to offer a carefully edited selection that’s foolproof to use so “you can do your make-up very quickly, without messing up”. It’s about the joy and confidence of simple, intelligent make-up.
Tell us about the new formula – how does it differ from your existing Vital Skin drops and stick? And is it suitable for everyday?
“Supreme Bio-Complex Liquid Foundation is our first true liquid foundation. It’s a weightless, medium coverage formula that blurs and smooths with a natural, hydrated finish, and brightens and reduces the look of wrinkles. It really sits in its own category. It’s first and foremost a makeup product, but I wanted it to be good for your skin too. The formula has Exosome Technology and the peptide-loaded Supreme Skin Bio-Complex. It’s super-easy to use and lasts all day.”
What about the ingredients – what’s key and why?
“The Supreme Skin Bio-Complex is a proprietary blend of Oligopeptide-1, Peptide Duontheglo and Vitamin B3 that jump-starts skin renewal, smooths and brightens overall tone, and firms. Amino Acid Powders blur, mattify and absorb excess oil without drying skin out. We spent three years getting this complex right, and it was worth every second. The results you see and feel are not an accident. Supreme Bio-Complex Liquid Foundation is a peptide infusion meets real-skin retoucher.”
How would you describe the finish of this foundation? Do you always recommend setting with powder?
“It has a weightless, medium coverage with a natural, hydrated finish that looks and feels supremely healthy and hydrated.”
We say: This has a satin, “eggshell” finish, almost as if it has powder built in. It’s not a glowy finish, but more like a second skin, nearly matte. It would be especially good for oilier skin types. A lovely lightweight feel for a natural-looking finish.
