Move over, slip skirts, there’s a new It skirt in town. While slinky, body hugging styles in satin and silk have been in vogue the last few seasons, fashion is embracing the full skirt for SS24. Think: an A-line shape circle skirt – usually in cotton-poplin or denim – that nips at the waist and delivers a voluminous shape. The trend crept into the fashion consciousness late last summer, when white cotton poplin styles started appearing on Instagram, now for SS24 the trend is expanding with denim fabrics, pleated iterations (not as prone to creases as cotton) and floral styles coming to the fore.
It’s a look that, on paper, should scream 1950s debutante, but in practice it’s quite contemporary. See brands such as Skall Studio and Aligne who are embracing the trend by dressing it down with simple white T-shirts or Aran knits, meanwhile on the high street, styles are being paired with lightweight knitted vests at Massimo Dutti or simple summer basics such as a black tank top at H&M. Right now we’d advise wearing with a boxy blazer, perhaps in a pinstripe, or a simple grey knit. The cardinal rule is to keep your look minimal, rather than ladylike: it’ll ensure you steer clear of looking like a Stepford wife. As for footwear? Pair your skirt with an updated ballet flat or a simple but refined mule. Shop an edit of our favourite full skirts below.
