They say style is often inherited, if not nurtured, and the recent sighting of Sienna Miller walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival 2024 with her 11-year-old daughter Marlowe Sturridge (Miller in a dusty lilac ruffle dress by Chloé, Sturridge in a sweet baby pink satin mini dress), has us thinking about mother-daughter style moments. Perhaps, as Miller demonstrates, the trend is swinging away from identikit ‘mini me’ dressing and a favouring of a shared aesthetic, theme or colour palette. Think Kaia Gerber and Cindy Crawford spotted in similar tailored jackets or Lily-Rose Depp and Vanessa Paradis, resplendent on the front row at Chanel, both in summer prints. Scroll below for the brands and shops that are a go-to for style conscious mothers and daughters.
The Little Wooden Peg
Arguably the jewel in the crown of Dun Laoghaire main street, The Little Wooden Peg was awarded Best Children’s Shop in THE GLOSS x The Shopkeepers Best Shops Ireland 2023. Known for its delectable children’s clothing (make it a go-to if you’re in need of a baby or birthday gift: it caters for newborns all the way up to ten years of age), the store also stocks womenswear, which in some cases is a companion to the children’s ranges. Take for instance, Spanish label The New Society and its bucolic pieces which would rival romantic brands like Dôen and Sézane. The vibe is less identikit dressing, more mother-and-baby working from a similar, dreamy aesthetic. www.thelittlewoodenpeg.com.
Yolke
Equal parts bucolic and desirable, British label Yolke is a favourite for conscious fashion, luxurious sleepwear and gorgeous home additions (the brand previously collaborated with chef Clodagh McKenna on a tableware range). Also on the roster is Little Yolke, a collection of cotton and silk children’s pyjamas, emblazoned with beautiful floral prints, in line with the womenswear collection. We dare you not to add everything to your wish list. www.yolke.co.uk.
Smallable
French family concept store Smallable is a treasure trove of insouciant womenswear and kids wear. While the vast women’s offering includes brands like Rails, APC and Anine Bing, there are some brands that cater to both mother and daughter. One to note is poetic Parisian brand Louise Misha, it makes bohemian-inspired clothes for women and girls from newborns to 14 years of age. There are also beautiful additions such as bed linen, blankets and weekend bags on offer. www.smallable.com.
Arket
Have you ever scrolled past a child’s outfit and thought, ‘I’d wear that entire look’? The experience is one you’ll become familiar with (fast) if you delve into the kids’ section of Arket. We’re already fans of the elevated high street offering at the H&M-owned brand, and the children’s range carries a similar finesse (and the same accessible price point). On our wish list: breezy linens, striped cotton shorts, puff sleeve tops and wide leg trousers, and – dare we say it – they’re even swaying us towards a pair of Crocs. www.arket.com.
