How To Build The Perfect Winter Capsule Wardrobe Whatever Your Style

A capsule wardrobe – that is, a finite number of pieces which form the architecture of your seasonal look – can differ from person to person. Without being too prescriptive, we’ve rounded up some of the most reliable pieces that you can wear on repeat for winter …

All products featured on thegloss.ie are selected by our editors. If you buy something through affiliate links on our site we may earn a commission.

An easy swap for the new year? Refresh your tired black coat with a crisp white one for occasions. This elegant single-breasted style worn by Rosie Huntington-Whitely is by The Row, but you can look to labels like The Kooples, Rohé, H&M and Claudie Pierlot for alternatives – we also love this style available on Zalando.

Loungewear has a whole new guise these days. Think less sloppy, more elevated separates in super soft fabrications that are the definition of modern luxury – perfect for winter walks, WFH days and slow mornings. Look for staple pieces like a great cardigan and turtlenecks that can be layered underneath.

Flat boots are your best friend for the next few weeks as temperatures drop, footpaths are icy and the weather is damp and wet. The best styles right now have a utilitarian leaning: think buckles and biker-inspired details, see the H&M pair below. Although, if that’s not your style, the season’s flat Chelsea boots are chic and comfortable too.

There’s never been such a focus on scarves as there has been this season. And the golden rule is the bigger the better. Styles meant for swathing and XL shapes are popular, as are jackets with inbuilt and detachable scarves. Look to styles made from mohair and cashmere – they might be a slightly higher price but they will serve you for years to come. If all else fails, make like the fashion crowd and tie a jumper around your shoulders. We love a poppy red knit with a navy coat.
