Wild Atlantic Women: Tanya McGilligan

Proof positive that COASTAL LIVING enhances wellbeing and STIMULATES CREATIVITY, twelve women at work along the Wild Atlantic Way share their local secrets with Penny McCormick. This week we speak to TANYA McGILLIGAN of Bumblebee Cottage …

“I love the view. The cottage is located half way up a mountain and overlooks the Atlantic ocean and Fintra bay. You can see six counties,” says Tanya McGilligan of Bumblebee Cottage, which she bought three years ago. It’s a complete contrast to McGilligan’s day job running Style Ikon, an online fashion website with pop-up shops. The renovations took four months and included putting down reclaimed oak flooring throughout, installing an imported 19th-century sandstone fireplace, creating a traditional-style kitchen and rethatching the roof with the aid of a grant from the Heritage Council. McGilligan and her husband, Adriaan de Boer, head of collections at the National Gallery of Ireland, have created the perfect bolthole for themselves and their two Rhodesian Ridgebacks. “Both of us cycle and run, the landscape is ideal for it and we often have the beaches to ourselves.” Now that the property is available to rent via Airbnb, McGilligan recommends visitors explore Slieve League (the highest cliffs in Europe), the Maghera caves and beach. As for restaurants, “Nancy’s pub in Ardara is a must for its seafood chowder. And Kitty Kelly’s restaurant in Kilcar is a real treat,” says McGilligan.
