At a time of increasing awareness around fashion’s impact on the environment, from damaging production processes to over-consumption and unnecessary destruction of goods (last year, reports emerged that one luxury brand had burned almost £30m worth of surplus stock in a bid to protect its brand reputation and avoid discounted sales of its products), consumers are beginning to step up en masse to tackle the issue and alternative, more sustainable ways to buy are emerging.
While reducing consumption by buying less and choosing well, shopping from local makers and sustainable, ethical brands are steps in the right direction, currently the most sustainable approach to shopping is buying vintage and pre-loved clothing and accessories, continuing the lifecycle of garments that are already produced. And while trawling through vintage shops is some shoppers’ idea of retail heaven, many of us still want a luxury experience. Enter Vestiaire Collective, a website that allows you to buy and sell pre-loved luxury goods. Orders from Vestiaire Collective come in branded packaging, affording the buyer a similar experience to shopping on luxury websites, and often include original product dustbags and boxes too.
This weekend it will be easier than ever to shop from Vestiaire Collective as they bring an exclusive pop-up shop to Brown Thomas Dublin. A specially curated edit of timeless classics and some of the most sought-after pieces from historic collections including Hermès, Christian Dior, Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton and Galliano will be available to purchase on Level 1. Not only can customers shop the collection, they can also sell through the service. Customers will have the opportunity to book an appointment in one of the store’s luxury personal shopping rooms where they will meet experts from Vestiaire Collective’s in-house curation team who will be on hand to offer valuations and advise on selling.
The Vestiaire Collective pop-up will take place at Brown Thomas Dublin from Friday 17 – Sunday 19 May. To book an appointment contact [email protected]
