The TRENCH COAT is here to stay THIS SEASON, but not as you know it …
Updated trench? Check. Round handle bag? Check. Marks & Spencer are ticking off trend after trend in their SS18 collection. At a preview in London we coveted the linen suits, woven accessories and a fabulous colour-block velvet dress (pictured below) all due to land in stores from this month, but top of the list was the reworked trench coat.
Undoubtedly a classic, the trench coat is the timeless outerwear your wardrobe needs. This season, designers got creative: think ultra-modern cuts, belted at the waist, plenty of ingenious panelling, luxe finishes and bleached-out variations on the classic beige. At Marks & Spencer this season trench coats come in statement-making gingham and a pared-back take on the classic with cuffed sleeves and concealed buttons. The beauty of the trench is that you can wear it over pretty much anything.
Explorer, the first spring collection arriving to Marks & Spencer this season, has a colour palette of green, beige and sand, easing customers out of winter and into spring with earthy tones to freshen up cold-weather wardrobes. This collection includes versatile pieces that can be worn throughout the season such as prints on dark based tones (like floral on black) so that they can be teamed just as easily with boots and a polo neck in February/March as they can with sandals and a light jacket once warmer weather arrives.
Horizon is the second spring trend which introduces gingham and check prints in a palette of red, white and navy. With a spring-ready feel, the collection offers up a smart casual look with trench coats and knitted jumpers paired with jeans for a relaxed take on new season dressing.
Speaking with the womenswear design team at the press show in London, the focus appeared to be all about wearable and versatile clothes, and buying into “wardrobe builders” – items that will update a seasonless wardrobe, like the trench coat. The SS18 collection includes more natural fibres like cotton and linen with the team working hard to ensure the right colour tone and fabric combination for each individual piece in the collection.
On today, the first day of February, after a long winter we’re welcoming the arrival of spring collections with open arms. Dressed in a cotton rich trench coat, of course.
