What To Expect From Brown Thomas SS18

On an otherwise gloomy January day in Dublin, bold and bright colours filled the minimalist, all-white runway at the launch of the SS18 collections at Brown Thomas. Graphic prints, colourful checks, fanciful florals and bohemian dresses stole the show, while undone hair, fresh skin and minimal make-up gave a hint of simplicity to the otherwise largely maximalist looks.

“Nostalgia is everywhere this season with designers looking back at the past to create the future”, says Brown Thomas fashion director Shelley Corkery, who wore a head-to-toe Céline look for the show this morning. From 1980s inspiration at Céline and Balenciaga to the understated classic silhouettes at Dior, and vintage comic book prints at Prada, a current of nostalgia certainly ran through the collections on show today.

There were pastel satins and silks by Sies Marjan, floor length floral gowns by Erdem and Zimmermann, updated trench coats by Stella McCartney and Céline, while Dodo Bar Or’s embroidered dresses had us dreaming of summer. A camel two piece comprising of a midi-length coat and maxi skirt by The Row looked fresh for spring paired with white leather trainers by Alexander McQueen, and a beige utilitarian-style linen suit by Stella McCartney was elevated when worn with hot pink satin slingback mules by Balenciaga.

Flats are back if today’s show is anything to go by; Delpozo showed pool slides accentuated with tulle and straw (to match their fabulously OTT headbands) and there were black gladiator-style sandals by Dior and Prada, while kitten heels also remain a strong trend going into the new season.

A standout favourite for THE GLOSS style editor Aislinn Coffey was a white shirt dress with neon yellow floral print by Rosie Assoulin, a brand new to Brown Thomas this season. A cream full-length coat dress with wide lapels by The Row and slingback kitten heels by Prada also appealed.

If there’s one thing to take away from today’s show it’s that spring/summer 2018 will be full to the brim with brightness and colour, if only through our wardrobes …
