Which mascaras are really worth the cash? Guest beauty expert, make-up artist Leonard Daly reveals his top five, at different price points:
Mascara is the item in your make-up bag that you probably change the least. When you find one that suits you, why would you change? I am in a very lucky position that I try out samples of new mascaras all the time – but only about 10 per cent make it into my working kit. New mascaras often have a gimmick or feature to make them stand out from the crowd. But will I buy the mascara that has a rolling wand again? Generally, no.
I always have about 5 mascaras in my kit, some of which have been around for many years and never bettered. I like all of them for different reasons: some are wetter and looser so you get a much lighter application; others are thick and you can really get a heavy-looking lash for some drama. I’ve been known to mix a couple of different brands to get the perfect lashes. As I only use disposable mascara wands, I never get the benefit of the technology that are in the newer wands. What this means is that you’ll get the full ‘extra’ version of what I like about the product – I have to work that bit harder!
1 First up is an oldie but a goodie: Great Lash Mascara from Maybelline. This mascara is so great for adding thickness to lashes: rolled along your whole lash you will have thicker fuller lashes in two swipes. This is one of the thicker mascaras, and you can only work with it when it’s still wet; add another layer before the bottom layer has dried, or else you’ll end up with flakes of mascara on your cheeks and lashes that look undone and messy. €7.45, available nationwide.
2 Nars Climax mascara is the perfect hybrid of a mascara that adds thickness and definition. The formula of the product is whipped inside so will give you thicker lashes without them going clumpy. It doesn’t get too dry on your lashes throughout the day so this is the perfect one if you’re heading out after work and just want to pump up your lash game! €25, at Brown Thomas.
3 Lancôme have always made the most perfect mascaras. Hypnôse mascara is the one that I always go to when I want full thick dramatic lashes, which I achieve by applying a few layers. If I want clumped lashes, which I think are super sexy, this is the mascara I’ll use: apply as normal and finally, using the tip of the mascara wand, I’ll stick 4-5 lashes together with what product is left, giving a very sexy 60s vibe. €31 at counters nationwide.
4 Kevyn Aucoin’s The Volume Mascara is my go-to for people over a certain age. It’s a moist mascara, meaning it won’t clump but it adds volume. It dries around the lash creating a tube of mascara; when you’re cleaning your face it will just clean off your lashes in these tubes, it’s magical. €26 at SpaceNK.
5 Finally I adore Trish McEvoy’s mascaras, and High Volume is the product that I use mostly for red-carpet clients and need to be 100 per cent sure that it’s going to look great for the whole time they are out – and that could be throughout a long day and night. And in my experience, Trish’s mascara is entirely dance-proof! €27, at Harvey Nichols, Dundrum.
