A whole load of new lipsticks have arrived on beauty counters for the new season, but these THREE STAND OUT from the crowd …
1 Chanel’s Rouge Coco Flash are creamy, glossy, shiny and easy to wear, whether you’re 20 or 80, in existing shades – such as icy-cool pale Boy – as well as new ones. My pick would be Noir Moderne, not just because it’s a great name, but it’s a sexy dark cherry that’s like the glossiest lip balm you’ve ever worn. From February.
2 Velvety matte red lipsticks are all the rage at the moment as created by make-up-artist brands – see Lisa Eldridge’s sell-out collection, and the popularity of Pat McGrath’s super-matte colours. They aren’t the easiest to wear – they can be drying, and require a certain chutzpah to carry off (you might need to use a liner for a precise finish, and they can act like a sponge, taking all the moisture from your lips). But the best ones make an immediate statement, and mean you need to wear little else on your face. My current favourite is Lancome’s L’Absolu Rouge Matte limited edition in a red bullet case (€30, at Brown Thomas and Arnotts, part of their Chinese New Year collection). The shade is Rouge Vintage, and it’s stunning, really matte and really bright.
3 I do think coral is worth a go this spring. It is one of those colours that has to be “colour of the year” to get attention, but once you’ve tried it, you appreciate its skin-warming qualities and fresh spring-like appeal. Charlotte Tilbury’s wearable Sexy Sienna (€32) flatters a really wide range of skin tones, and is just fun and lighthearted to wear.
