Why You Should Visit The Spa at The Shelbourne

3 MIN READ SAVE

Bunking off for an afternoon and holing up at the Shelbourne’s Spa sounds like a brilliant idea while it’s winter. An hour or two in here is deeply restorative and certainly gives you a boost to get through until the days start to get longer.

And there are different levels of treats. Until February 29, there’s an offer of €155 for an 80-minute Ultimate Detox teatment; I’d recommend therapist Lauren for this as she does a great neck and shoulder massage as part of the treatment. Arrive in good time for a swim in the peaceful pool – it’s always surprising that there is such a large pool right here on Stephen’s Green. It’s more old-school than height of modernity, in keeping with the 1848 hotel building; it’s perfect for swimming laps rather than lounging around beside. With Elemis products in the showers, and lovely friendly staff, it’s a great spot to know about.

The best way to get access to the pool, other than booking a treatment, is to just nip in for an hour, for €39 per person (Mon, Tue 5-7pm, Wed-Fri 5-8pm). This gives you access to wind down in the pool, sauna and steam room. Then head up to the relaxation room, surely one of Dublin’s most elegant, with high ceilings and views over the Green. It feels all the more of an oasis for overlooking the mania of Stephen’s Green traffic.

In the beautiful Salon – the most stylish part of the Spa – you can have a blowdry (or manicure, from €30, pedicure, or make-up application, from €35) with coffee in this calm space bang in the centre of town. They recently changed over to the much in-demand Kevin Murphy products – if you’re blonde and haven’t yet tried the Blonde Angel range, I urge you to immediately; it not only smells gorgeous, but it leaves your hair incredibly soft.

I’d forgotten that the Salon is open from 7am every weekday; stylist Victoria notes that the early-morning blowdry is becoming as popular here as it is in New York or London. Vogue editor Anna Wintour famously has a daily 5am blowdry; I aspire to even starting each week here, with perfect bouncy hair to see me through the week. €32 for blowdry plus coffee and pastry, Monday-Friday 7-11am.
