Filipa Pato 3B Sparkling Rosé, Bairrada NV
For the first time in living memory we’ve had the right kind of summer for rosé – so much so that quite a few wine shops have run out of stock at various times over the past few months. Pink wine feels glamorous and frivolous and upbeat. It’s also refreshing and food-friendly. Why not give it another month?
The other day I popped the cork on one of the bottles of Filipa Pato’s sparkling Portuguese rosé bought after our Gloss wine dinner in the Merrion Hotel in May. (FYI, The Gloss runs several sumptuous wine dinners at The Merrion every year, open to all, one of the benefits of which is that the wines we feature can be ordered at special prices.) A favourite on the night, it once again tasted so juicily delicious that I’ve decided it will keep me smiling through September.
Filipa Pato, by the way, is the kind of feisty, independent woman whom Gloss readers might well like to support in their drinking habits. The daughter of Luis Pato, one of Portugal’s best known rebel winemakers in his day, she has been running her own estate since 2001. Already fully organic, it will soon have biodynamic certification.
Filipa’s mantra is ‘Wines without make-up’. Her aim, purity and authenticity, has certainly been achieved in 3B: purity of flavour, first of all, in notes of red summer fruits with an underlying firmness, and authenticity because the style is resolutely Portuguese. The main grapes are native Baga and Bical and the region Bairrada – three Bs, hence the name 3B.
Pour this as an aperitif for a few friends and you may be dismayed at the speed with which the bottle empties. If any can be saved, try it with a nice little tomato salad, a plate of cold meats or a red fruit pud like Eton mess.
