The Jewellery Edit: Lucky Coins

NATASHA SHERLING is putting her money on the coin trend to dominate this summer …

Somewhat talismanic, the jingle jangle of coin and medallion jewellery straddles vibes stretching from bohemian to wealthy-Italian-at-lunch. For the look of the latter, there’s no more obvious place to start than Dolce & Gabbana who layer heaps of gold atop bold floral or leopard prints; Oscar de la Renta put their American spin on things by pairing heavy metal with sunshine yellows and striped kaftans ready for a night out in the Hamptons; while Versace did Medusa-head coin hair slides, perfect for a slightly more subtle take on the trend.

Closer to home, I was chatting to Brown Thomas personal shopper extraordinaire Michelle Curtin this week and was totally dazzled by her styling of medallion hoops and a necklace together with a boldly printed dress (there’s that Dolce again). Meanwhile, Kenneth Jay Lane, always on top of jewellery trends, has a ready-layered necklace for the easiest way to capture the trend – and better yet, it’s currently on sale.

Chupi, with her focus on all things Irish, has a collection of single pendants featuring castings of old farthings while & Other Stories has swiftly picked up on the trend with their fabulous selection of earrings and single medallion pendants.

These collections feel particularly appropriate out in the sunshine; no wonder they seem a permanent feature of summer catwalks – we love the idea of investing in a precious version to take out year after year; antique shops and auctions are worth a rummage on this front; keep an eye out in particular for half sovereigns dangling from chains, charm bracelets and drop earrings.
