In the first of a new series where we peek inside the jewellery box of some of Ireland’s most fashion-forward women, jewellery editor Natasha Sherling takes a look at Katie Tsouros most treasured pieces …
When it comes to jewellery, I tend to go for pieces that are quite funky – big, bold or unusual always draws my eye, no matter if it’s costume or fine. My mum shares my style sentiments, which is lucky for me – lots of my own favourite pieces were gifts or hand-me-downs from her!
I like settings to be quite chunky, particularly when it comes to costume jewellery – I really like my jewellery to make a statement, though I do have one or two dainty pieces in my jewellery box too. My love of the big and the bold is what led me to start my own jewellery company, Akaterina – we specialise in fabulous oversized earrings and recently launched a very limited edition collection of cocktail rings.
For every day I love rings in particular and have five that are very special. I have two large cocktail rings, one is an antique from John Farrington that is a rectangle amber stone surrounded by diamonds, and the other is a sapphire surrounded by diamonds in a chunky yellow gold setting.
My platinum Chopard ring was a gift from my parents for my 18th birthday; it is from the Happy Diamonds range and there are central diamonds that dance around inside a platinum outline. I usually wear it every day, along with quite a dainty antique ring dotted with 48 really tiny diamonds that my boyfriend gave me for our first Christmas together. The other special ring is my mum’s original engagement ring, which she later upgraded. It’s a really beautiful diamond ring with a large centre stone and baguettes on either side. I have that safely stowed away and may reset it in the future into a piece of my own.
When it comes to costume jewellery, I always go for big earrings and Akaterina really follows that vibe. I love really sparkly, glamorous pieces, and glitzy statement pieces will always stand out. The Gaia earrings (above) are made from raffia and beads; the materials and style make them a little different. You also can’t beat a good pair of drop earrings and the Kianas are my go to. They are sparkly, chunky and their turquoise detail makes them perfect for summer. I like to get away whenever I can and I’m a BIG fan of jewellery on the beach. My statement earrings with a big ring and some long layered necklaces or stacked bracelets are my go-to style to keep things sparkling in the sun.
