Sean Scully is considered to be one of the world’s leading abstract painters. Born in Dublin and raised in London, he now lives between New York and Germany. In 2020, Scully will have a major touring retrospective beginning in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, (May 2020) travelling onto the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, USA.
Scully has been asked to design Christmas tree at The Connaught, which was unveiled outside the hotel beside the world-famous Tadao Ando fountain, in Mount Street – the heart of Mayfair in London.
The nine-metre Norway Spruce tree has been transformed into Scully’s distinctive style of abstract art, decorated in four nuanced blocks of colour featuring blue, purple, red and yellow – the tree is lit with 25,000 light bulbs. Commenting on the tree Scully says, “It’s a Suprematist Christmas tree wearing a starry night magician’s hat.”
This is the fifth year The Connaught Christmas tree has been designed by an artist and Scully follows in the footsteps of Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley, Tracey Emin and Michael Craig-Martin. www.the-connaught.co.uk
