Guests gathered at Dromoland Castle & Country Estate on Saturday 22nd February for a gorgeous Wine Dinner hosted by Mary Dowey, Wine Editor of The Gloss. It was the perfect weekend to relax in the inviting interior of Dromoland with its open fires and wonderful staff offering genuine Irish hospitality.
The six-course dinner was the highlight of Dromoland’s now famous annual spring Wine Lovers’ Weekend which offers wine buffs and enthusiasts a chance to a tour the Castle’s wine cellar with sommelier Ian Scott, and taste exquisite wines chosen by Mary Dowey to accompany delicious dishes planned and executed by Executive Head Chef David McCann.
Over Champagne Louis Roederer Brut Premier NV, Managing Director of Dromoland, Mark Nolan welcomed guests in the drawing room before we repaired to the panelled grandeur of the Earl of Thomond dining room for the first course of Doonbeg Crab served with a zesty Mitchell Watervale Riesling from Clare Valley, Australian being Dowey’s Riesling of choice, for its consistency and quality. This was followed by Wild Fillet of Brill and accompanied by a very special Domaine Papagiannakos Kalogeri Malagouzia, Attiki 2018 from the cellar.
Mary Dowey then introduced a fabulous Beaujolais: Moulin a Vent 2016 from Domaine Lucien Lardy which was paired with Chicken Liver Parfait, Truffle Mayo and Warm Brioche. The wine conjured up heady aromas of raspberries and strawberries, the concentrated flavours a marvellous match for the parfait. Burren Lamb was accompanied by a refined red from Portugal – Esporao Reserva, Alentejo 2016. As readers of The Gloss will know, Dowey loves to depart from the mainstream, discovering interesting and lovely wines from not so well-known vineyards.
The dessert of Irish Rhubarb Sorbet and Poached Meringue was served with the most delicious GD Vajra Moscato d’Asti 2018, a huge hit at that stage of the evening and not least for its low alcohol content. Those guests who did not convene in the bar and The Gallery for post-prandial drinks headed for the five-star luxury of their newly refurbished rooms where the turn-down service and pillow chocolates rounded off the perfect night.
