The €9 Nail Polish We’ll Be Buying This Autumn

… along with a LAVENDER-SCENTED nail polish remover to make our AT-HOME MANICURES extra special …

Traditionally, finding natural beauty products that weren’t grey, thick or prone to go off, was quite a mission. There were always honourable exceptions, such as Dr Hauschka, Weleda and French brand Phyt’s, founded in the 1970s, but otherwise the choice wasn’t great. How things are changing. Mainstream brands are increasingly focussing on being transparent about what’s in their formulas, while consumers are actively searching for more natural and organic ingredients.

While natural skincare is now easier to get hold of – fantastic Irish brands such as The Burren Perfumery, Warrior Botanicals and Bare Chic Skin have taken the worthiness out and made natural and organic skincare beautiful to use – make-up has always been a bit trickier. Dr Hauschka has a new make-up range, including more shades of foundation and a newly formulated concealer for more coverage; and Couleur Caramel does some decent concealers, foundations and powders (find it at Virginie Claire’s salon in Harold’s Cross). Now & Other Stories is emphasising the natural focus of their excellent Paris Atelier range, with some impressive new make-up and beauty items launching in October. “Our range is inspired by a community garden in Paris – we sourced active ingredients from fruits, vegetables and trees, all with certified French origin. We’re proud to launch formulations with an average of 85 per cent natural origins,” says in-house chemist Catarina Aberg.

The range combines glamour with active natural ingredients such as luscious cold-pressed plum oil. The rich dark lipstick, Raisin Egal, is the colour of plum, in fact, and perfect for the new season, either dabbed on lightly as a stain or perfected with a lip brush. We’re also very taken with the lavender-scented nail polish remover (€9), with lots of moisturising almond oil, in a pretty glass bottle – such an appealing upgrade to what’s usually so boring and bog-standard (though we realise sniffing polish remover is not a great habit to get into). But if we had to choose just one thing it would be the Nail Polish in Raven Futé, a delicious dark lilac-brown that looks rich and smart for autumn, and has great shine and staying power, plus an excellent wide brush, all for less than a tenner. Other shades include grey, burgundy and light pink. The collection is in store and online from October.
