The Beauty Brands Stepping Up To Help

Beauty companies are stepping up at this unprecedented time of need. Paris-based luxury goods giant LVMH were quick off the mark in announcing support for beleaguered hospitals, using their fragrance production facilities at three different sites in France to produce hand sanitiser – they are set to donate 12 tonnes of hand sanitiser to hospitals across Paris this week alone, and will continue while it’s needed. While LVMH are usually producing elegant bottles of Louis Vuitton or Dior perfume, they’re now repurposing factory equipment to produce this vital gel.

Beauty giant L’Oréal has also launched a solidarity programme across Europe. Their factories are ramping up production of hand sanitiser to support the needs of French and European health authorities. La Roche-Posay is set to equip partner hospitals, care homes and main partner pharmacies in Europe with hand sanitiser, and is already supplying free bottles to those French pharmacies able to produce their own hand sanitiser in their dispensaries. Garnier will also supply and distribute several million units of hand sanitiser to its food distribution customers across Europe. L’Oréal are freezing payments for hair salons, small perfume shops etc in their distribution networks until businesses resume, and the L’Oréal Foundation is donating one million euros to charities they work with, all as a way of “taking responsibility to contribute to the collective effort in every way possible,” and “expressing our recognition, our support and our solidarity towards those who are demonstrating extraordinary courage and selflessness in their efforts to combat this pandemic,” explains Jean-Paul Agon, Chairman and CEO of L’Oréal.

The Clarins group are providing hand sanitiser to the French health service: their industrial sites in Pontoise, Strasbourg and Amiens have already produced and delivered 14,500 bottles of hand sanitiser to hospitals, in large-format 400ml bottles, as a first step in assisting hospital staff, and will continue to do so for as long as necessary.

Closer to home, the very wonderful Handmade Soap Company, based in Meath, have spent the last few weeks working on supplies of hand sanitiser, which is made in Ireland and has lemongrass and cedarwood to make it smell good as well as killing 99.9 per cent of bacteria. It’s limited availability via www.thehandmadesoapcompany.com at €6.95 and is a great way of supporting a small Irish company that has natural kindness as its ethos.

Other great initiatives include Irish Distillers supporting the HSE by supplying large quantities of alcohol gel to healthcare authorities – they have the products and supply chain available to manufacture alcohol gel and are supplying it for free and delivering it to the HSE supply centre for as long as it’s needed. And L’Occitane are sending hand creams to hospitals in the UK and Ireland “to soothe hardworking hands” and offering free 30ml hand creams to any HSE workers when they bring their card to their nearest boutique.

Hopefully these good ideas will help spur other big companies into action …
