The Art of Working Out

Colour therapy and paint-splash prints are key to HELEN STEELE‘s first athleisure collection for Dunnes Stores …

If you’ve vowed to get back into a fitness routine as part of your New Year’s resolutions, then listen up. Irish artist and fashion designer Helen Steele has created a 21-piece collection of athleisure wear in collaboration with Dunnes Stores, and it’s the only gym kit you’ll need this year. With its mood enhancing colours and print, it will help to give you the motivation to exercise that we often lack during the winter months.

Steele’s designs often centre around the idea of colour therapy, which outlines that each specific colour has a certain energy, visual effect and impact on your mood. Speaking on her Instagram account, Steele said: ‘This collection has been created with colour therapy prints to balance the mind, these prints are crafted to hug the body in the most flattering of ways. Hitting all the right points, with smart fabric capabilities. Making you feel good in the beautiful body that you have.’

In advance of the collection launch tomorrow, January 8, Steele took to the windows of Dunnes Stores on Grafton Street to create a visual feast of print for passersby. Each piece in the collection features a bespoke custom print fabric design that has been hand painted, photographed and manipulated by Helen at her studio in a converted duck hatchery in Co Monaghan, where paint splatters abound on floors, ceilings, furnishings – much like the windows of Dunnes Stores.

Steele’s daughter Halle (a model with Not Another Agency) stars in the campaign lookbook.

The innovative new collection includes key pieces such as leggings, puffa jackets, half zip tops, sweatshirts and oversized drawstring t-shirts, all in a range of technical and cotton mix fabrics. All of the pieces are accessibly priced (starting at €15) and inclusive with sizing ranging from XS to XL. A celebration of body positivity and inclusivity, Steele commented: ‘I am inspired by the women of Ireland of all ages, who get out and walk or run on the paths, streets, beaches and forests of Ireland, come hail, rain, sleet or snow. These women are all shapes, ages and sizes, and they want to feel and look good.’

The Helen Steele x Dunnes Stores collection will go on sale on Tuesday, January 8, online at and in selected Dunnes Stores nationwide, including a pop-up shop in Dunnes Stores Grafton Street Dublin and in Dunnes Stores Monaghan.
