Talking Beauty with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Model and businesswoman Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has just been announced as an ambassador for bareMinerals beauty. She’s also set up her own social media platform Rose Inc, not forgetting her role with Marks & Spencer Autograph, from lingerie to lipstick. With her passion for beauty, though, we reckon it’s just a matter of time before she creates her own independent line of make-up. Meanwhile, we caught up with her in London to talk beauty, favourite London places to go and her favourite red lipstick …

ON BEAUTY “I love to see what women are wearing – I love seeing women wear make-up – women who perhaps aren’t in the industry who love make-up, whether it’s a girl walking down the street who’s made an effort with her make-up, I just think it’s really inspiring. Being in the industry so long it’s easy to take it for granted that I get to work with all the best people in the industry and I get to work with amazing brands and be the first to try all these incredible products, so when I see “real” women or women who aren’t attached to the industry, I love to see what inspires them. I just launched a content platform called Rose Inc and it’s such a great way to connect with women and hear what they want and what they’re saying and have this community of beauty junkies. I’m always asking everybody what they’re loving.”

ON LONDON HOTSPOTS “I’ve stayed at the Soho Hotel in London for about eight years and have so many happy memories – I stay here once every six to eight weeks or even once a month, and I love being in Soho. I live in LA, so when I get to London I love to be in the heart of Soho. You see so much life on the street, and there are so many places to go, from cafes to hot restaurants. And just walking around is such a change – in LA no one really walks around and there’s no real life on the streets or street culture, so to come here and be right in the heart of Soho usually takes me a bit of time to get my head round it at first. I really love being here, and to come back from a long day of work, take time and relax in my own space – I’m a real homebody. We’re in London for a bit at the moment so we went to eat at Sabor a new Spanish tapas restaurant and honestly I think it’s one of the best meals I’ve ever had in my life – it’s really such a cool place. There’s a great place called Flat White that does really good coffee, and another called Over Under which I really love. There’s so much here – Bar Italia is a favourite too and Fernandez Wells to sit at the bar and have a glass of wine.”

ON HER TRAVEL BEAUTY BAG “I always carry with me the few essentials that can get me from A to B. I’m a long-time fan of the bareMinerals Original Foundation – I just love the way it looks and how quick and easy it is to use. I was a bit apprehensive at first using a powder for all-over coverage, I thought it might look powdery and cakey – but first of all it takes less than a minute to do your base, and second it gives me incredible coverage – I use a bit of concealer under my eyes or on any imperfections or red areas, then I buff the powder all over my face and onto my neck. It’s such a luminous full-cover finish and it lasts all day. It gets better as the day goes on and I find I never need to touch it up. I also find it simpler than a liquid foundation to apply on the go, on a plane or whatever. Also a restorative cream such as Butter Drench Restorative Rich Cream, which is just incredible for reapplying all that moisture back into your skin – we all know that flying can make you feel like you’ve aged 25 years, so I’m always reaching for those products that are going to put that moisture and plumpness back into your skin, that fullness.”

JUST ONE THING … “I always travel with a red lipstick – I feel it’s a classic, sexy, timeless look, it’s elegant. You can wear a red lipstick so many ways, whether day or night: you can put it on with your finger and it’s like a stain, you can wear it really intense and it’s that strong classic look, or you can blur the edges and have a more undone red lip look, and I think it’s just classic, and easy as a go-to if you’re looking for a way to take your look from day to night. It’s something you know will work with every outfit. I have so many red lipsticks – I’m always adding more into my cosmetic wardrobe. There’s a new barePRO red lipstick launching in January and it’s a real fiery sexy red – it makes eyes look bluer and teeth whiter. I wore it when shooting the bareMinerals campaign in New York recently and I got loads of comments on Instagram asking about the red lip. It’s my new favourite.”

ON GETTING THE GLOW “I’m obsessed with highlighter and really I’m always looking for products that give me that luminous dewy look that make me look like I have it from the inside. I’m drawn towards highlighters that look natural and dewy and luminous. I use barePRO Glow Highlighter [available at Brown Thomas soon] on cheekbones and browbone – though I do think less is more with highlighter. I think it’s always worth checking your make-up before you leave the house or office, in daylight or natural light – sometimes when we apply we don’t always do it in the best light – and check that it’s all blended in. For me, make-up is all about looking naturally and authentically you but enhanced, a better version of yourself.”

ON SCENT “Sometimes I wear my man’s fragrance – if he’s away and I miss him I’ll go into his bathroom and put it on – I love his scent, he wears an Hermès fragrance and he’s just the best-smelling person in the world, after little Jack, so…”

bareMinerals is available at Brown Thomas.
