Nuala Woulfe Knows Good Skin

As skincare clinics prepare to re-open, we talk to expert Nuala Woulfe about what we want and what we need for our skin right now …

If you’ve ever talked about skin with Nuala Woulfe, you’ll know why her treatments are in such demand: she is a mine of information, with more than 37 years’ experience. So what are people most keen to return to her clinic for? Woulfe’s survey found that most clients had Botox at the top of their list. They are also longing for a massage, as well as her renowned facials and non-surgical treatments such as IPL, radio frequency and LED. There are stringent measures in place to ensure that both staff and clients have absolute confidence in returning to the two Sandycove salons. “To start with we will offer shorter, less hands-on treatments, and more machine-led treatments,” she notes.

As Dublin’s flagship SkinCeuticals clinic, Nuala Woulfe is also the go-to for results-driven skincare. You’ll find a 360° approach to beauty and wellness; for example, a consultation with nutritional therapist Maev Creaven could be in order after all those biscuits during lockdown … Creaven can test your microbiome, evaluate hormonal balance and create a tailored diet plan.

Over the past few months, many of us have been missing those beauty treatments we take for granted, such as waxing, threading, tinting and tanning. A body scrub and organic spray tan sounds like a great idea when summer holidays are less than certain. Whether a file and polish (from €20) or a deluxe pedicure, small treats can lift us up and make us feel good.

Your skin focus for summer

For many people, sorting their skin is a priority post-lockdown. And that involves protecting it. “The sun is fantastic – but UV is your worst enemy when it comes to your skin,” says Woulfe. “It causes damage and trauma. And skin cancer is very prevalent and on the increase. Bear in mind that genetics only play a tiny part in how your skin looks – environmental issues, from smog to blue light, lifestyle and especially sunlight, cause 92 per cent of skin ageing.”

Prevention is better than cure. Woulfe sees clients in their 20s with pigmentation, due to increased sun exposure. Even if you’re in Ireland all summer, UVA rays can still cause damage, including to collagen, which leads to lines and wrinkles – whatever your age. And dark spots are hard to treat. “Pigmentation has a memory: we can work to lighten it on the surface but if you then spend 15 minutes in the sunlight unprotected, it can come straight back. So the longer you protect your skin and use antioxidants to treat and heal its surface, the better.” Products have improved, she says: “I have seen good results using SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defence (€95).”

Reducing skin ageing right now …

1 Wear the right SPF The quality of your SPF is vital, notes Woulfe. Wearing make-up with SPF in is not enough; UVA rays can still cause deep-down damage. “Wear daily broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays – not a beauty SPF or a moisturiser with SPF, but something that reflects the rays away and offers a barrier. Choose something clinically proven, especially on children or if you have any skin issues.” TRY: SkinCeuticals Advanced Brightening UV Defense SPF 50 (€49), which brightens skin as well as protects. www.nualawoulfe.ie

2 Don’t forget antioxidants “It’s not just what you put on your skin. I encourage people to eat brightly coloured veg in order to protect from the inside out. Antioxidants help to protect you from UV rays; SPFs can only do so much.” For topical antioxidants, look to vitamin C or Phloretin. “Phloretin is a superior antioxidant to protect environmentally exposed skin.” TRY: SkinCeuticals C.E. Ferulic (€150), a vitamin C serum with visible effects including brighter, more even skin. www.nualawoulfe.ie

3 Take supplements Woulfe notes that fish oils are beneficial for skin, while vitamins A and D can help skin to be less reactive to retinol. TRY: “I have been impressed with the ingredients in Skinade, which contains a marine collagen peptide that stimulates the body’s own collagen production by stimulating the fibroblasts, to produce more collagen.” www.nualawoulfe.ie
