When Will Irish Hotels Open Again?

Irish hospitality is acknowledged globally for its warmth of welcome and attention to detail, and this year it’s more important than ever to support our local hoteliers, and enjoy some special offers, when Irish hotels open again to receive guests on July 20.

While many may be disappointed not to travel overseas this year, a staycation provides an opportunity to appreciate the efforts (and sacrifices) the Irish tourist industry has made in these last few months, as well as discover old and new places. All hotels have made adjustments to allow for social distancing in dining and public areas, while staff have been meticulously trained to ensure that guests can relax knowing that they are being looked after to the highest of standards.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be profiling offers at every price point and providing information about all manner of staycations – from glamping to self catering options, and from tempting overnight city stays to family-centred breaks and more. This week, it’s all about castles and glossy breaks in inspiring locations.

Connemara has a special place in my heart and the Victorian country house that is Ballynahinch Castle Hotel is character and charm personified. Surrounded by lush woods and 700 acres ideal for exploring on hikes, walking tours or cycling, the hotel has an innovative “Pick Your Picnic” offer inclusive of a two-night stay. This can be enjoyed in any number of locations throughout the estate. Choose from a Ballynahinch rucksack filled with traditional sandwiches, goodies and refreshments, a cheese and wine hamper to enjoy on the grounds or further afield, or a lavish picnic laid out in the gorgeous walled garden at Ballynahinch, complete with blanket, basket, radio and a deck of playing cards. “Pick your Picnic” at Ballynahinch is available from €440 per person; www.ballynahinch-castle.com

Discretion and comfort is guaranteed at Ballyvolane House, Co Cork on short breaks or longer stays this summer, and having welcomed royalty in the past (HRH Prince of Wales) service can be dialled up or dialled down as desired. Its “Splendid Isolation” offer means families can have the Main House to themselves which comprises six bedrooms (sleeping 12) with extra fold-away beds available if needed. Onsite, there is plenty of fun to be had with a tennis court, badminton area, a 7-aside soccer pitch, croquet lawn, lakes for canoeing and swimming, clay pigeon shooting, jogging routes and a magical woodland for walks. For the more sedate, the gardens at Ballyvolane are glorious and can be appreciated from sun-loungers and deckchairs in the gardens – those who want to help with weeding are also welcomed. Nearby, the beautiful Blackwater valley, with its many gardens and historic sites are well worth visiting, while the pristine sandy beaches on the East Cork and West Waterford coastline, and villages of Ballycotton, Kinsale and Ardmore are close by for day trips too. Dromoland Castle in Co Clare has been welcoming guests since the 16th century and its woodland setting is the backdrop to pursuits such as falconry, fishing, clay pigeon shooting, a challenging 18-hole golf course and much more. Meanwhile Ashford Castle, on the shores of Lough Corrib in Co Mayo has welcomed A-listers and outdoor enthusiasts, and offers more than 30 outdoor activities including the estate’s Eddie Hackett-designed nine-hole golf course. For those wishing to experience their combined elegance and exquisite surroundings the “Legendary Castles” promotion will appeal. Packages are based on two people sharing on a bed and breakfast basis, and start from two nights to four nights. For example, as part of the offer guests can stay for two nights at Ashford followed by two nights at Dromoland (for €1,800) This offer is for bookings made until July 4 and valid for breaks taken between July 20 – October 31.
